New show in the works - The Daily Commute
I know what you're thinking. Carl! Get some sleep! Well, I assure you, there'll be plenty of time to sleep when my work is done.
Yes, that's right, I'm going to start doing a DAILY podcast.
Details:
- Name: The Daily Commute
- Available every weekday morning before work
- 15-20 minutes tops
- News for nerds of all ilks: Developers, IT, DBA, Managers, etc.
- Headlines only with shrinkster links read aloud and on the site
- No mindless drivel or self-indulgence
The idea is not new. It's a podcast. The difference is that it's less about ME ("hey! this is my podcast, aren't I great?") and more about giving you a heads up on what you're going to be reading online before you get to sit down at your PC. Without good timing this won't work at all, but I think I can do it.
What does this mean for .NET Rocks! and/or Mondays?
Not a damn thing. Both are going extremely well and we will continue to do them.
Short Term Plan:
Audio only. Limited production (music, etc.) Emphasis on getting it on your iPod before you have to leave for work. No ads. Get as many people as possible listening. Find stand-in to host the show when I need to take a break. :-)
Long Term Plan:
Video and Audio. High production quality. Go big.
When will it be available?
I have the domains thedailycommute.com and thedailycommute.net I will have a quick and dirty website up soon. After the site is up I will ask for RSS feeds from anyone who wants to contribute a news source. I will also have a place where subscribers can register and get a podcast feed URL. We're going ask a few questions of subscribers just to have some simple demographic information and to get an idea of how many listeners we have. Then we will start producing.
So, that doesn't answer the question, I know. It will be at least a week. Maybe two. In the meantime if you have suggestions I'd love to hear them.
<candid> There is one big reality that I must share. If I'm doing a daily podcast it will be very difficult to teach classes, speak at user groups, and do anything other than a code camp (weekend) once in a while. I have not yet been able to make enough of a living from my shows that I can afford to stop teaching classes. This is where I see things headed, however. Don't worry. I teach all of the classes that I advertise on my website. Nobody is getting cancelled. But, there will come a day when I will teach much less frequently. For that reason, I am recording my classes and I will sell them on DVD. Some of the material I will give away as well.
Being able to focus 100% on DNR, Mondays, The Daily Commute, and any other podcasts that I produce will mean better content more frequently. In order to make that happen, I need your help to get as many people as you know turned on to what we're trying to do here. The more people listen to The Daily Commute, the sooner I can sell ad space to pay for it, and the sooner I can shift my career over to podcasting full time! End result is better podcasts for you to listen to. </candid>
Let The Daily Commute Begin!
