The Old Boys Club

Pascal is saying out loud what many in the community are thinking ...

I am surely not going to make friends with this post, but my rant of the day going to Telligent ... link

It's disturbing that (supposedly) open source community projects can all of a sudden go "private" - free version or not.

Let's not mention that those same "community" projects are being used to tout a private consultancy company.

Is this the community spirit we aspire to?

  • I fully agree. I for one think this is a big step backward for open source .NET development projects in general. What Telligent is doing leaves a bad taste in the mouth of much of the .NET OSS community, especially those who have embraced those projects being put under the new Community Server brand.

  • Alex, thanks for that. I don't know if it's also a different vision btween Europe and US but here we make a clear difference between Community projects and Commercial stuff. As I said to Rob before, I have nothing against making money, quite normal. But hijacking on the name of better support and development a tool so emblematic of the community spirit at the start of .Net. this is really bad. All this started also when I went to Telligent site to upgrade my version of ASPNet Forums and discovered that the 'Free' version was accessible only through a secure https access in a store page, and after a question about payment.Surely newbies are misleading there, and they surely paid their free version. Damn the business rules :-)

  • Same thing with .Text... I tend to agree. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now, but definitely somewhat concerning.

  • Well the author and license holder of .Text works for Telligent. Scott W. can do whatever he wants to with his code since it's BSD licensed.
