My experience installing Windows 7

By now, you probably know about the announcement from Mr. Balmer Ballmer provided a preview of new features and key improvements in Windows 7 that reflect Microsoft’s commitment to focusing on customer’s top priorities and emerging interests. He announced the availability of the Windows 7 beta  on January 9 via Customer Preview Program or CPP.

So Microsoft gave me a copy of the latest Windows 7 to install it, let’s see how good is this new OS by installing it on my kids computer. A Windows XP, Pentium 4 Dell Dimension DIM 2400, Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. Yummy!

I selected to download the latest from the web, a 800 Kb file came down the pipe.

You can upgrade or completely install, yet …

You can only upgrade from Windows Vista, yet gives me the option on XP and then tells me that I cannot do that. I’m sure that will be corrected by the release.

Not enough space to install Windows 7. Yet doesn’t tell me how much space I should free in this old computer.

image

I freed information until I had 10 GB of free space in the hard disk, looks like that was the sweet spot for the installer.

The computer will restart to finish the installation.

Next post I’ll give you my experience using this new computer with Windows 7 installed. If it runs in that old computer well is the proof that we are all waiting for.

Cheers

Al
