10 Songs I Didn't Choose

Hello Everybody! It's Meme Time!
Source: Brad Wilson

Step 1: Open your mp3 player.
Step 2: Put all of your music on random.
Step 3: List the first ten songs it plays, no matter how embarrassing.

  1. Jimi Hendrix - Still Raining, Still Dreaming (Electric Ladyland)
  2. Tom Petty - The Waiting (Playback)
  3. The Beatles - Lovely Rita (Sgt Peppers)
  4. Counting Crows - Round Here (VH1 Storytellers)
  5. Bob Dylan - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (Live 1966)
  6. Jimi Hendrix - Burning of the Midnight Lamp (Electric Ladyland)
  7. Robin Williams - Ballet (Night at the Met)
  8. DJ Kick - Head Buster (The Trance Magnet)
  9. The Cranberries - No Need To Argue (No Need To Argue)
  10. Beck - Get Real Paid (Midnite Vultures)

Overall, a pleasing mix... but with over 5000 tracks, I thought it came out a little classic-rock heavy... and having two tracks from Electric Ladyland seemed rather bizarre.

I had to redo it because the first list was ENTIRELY Smashing Pumkins and Radiohead. While that would often accurately describe my listening habits, it was not a representative cross-section of my at-work MP3s.

1) Eye of the Beholder - Metallica (And Justice for all)
2) Departure - REM (New Adventures in Hi-Fi)
3) Driver 8 [Live] - REM (In the Attic)
4) Diamonds on the soles of her shoes - Paul Simon (Graceland)
5) Hurtin Crue - Descendents (Hallraker)
6) Bring on the Night - The Police (Live)

8) Foxey Lady - Jimi Hendrix (Are you experienced)
9) At my window sad and lonely - Wilco/Billy Brag (Mermad Avenue)
10) Anybody seen my baby - Rolling Stones (40 Licks)

Hmm... I would have expected more variety (3 REM??).
I once explained to my wife & inlaws how computer generated random numbers aren't usually REALLY random (most apps use pseudo-RNGs). Now whenever I mention that my CD or MP3 player is on random, the wife comments "but is it REALLY random?". I think she's making fun of me for being such a geek.
But looking at my list, maybe Windows Media Player needs a true random number generator. ;)
