  • Mix09: Hanselminutes on Channel 9

While I was running around Mix09 and the MVP Summit this last few weeks I was taking video with my Flip Ultra and my new Creative Vado HD ( I took the Flip Mino HD back , as I thought the quality was poor). I put a bunch of these videos up on Channel 9 and declared it " Hanselminutes On 9 ." It's not official, but maybe if you leave comments they'll make it a regular thing. Some of the videos are pretty cool . Others, totally useless . ;) While Channel 9 recompresses my already compressed streams, I want to point out that the letterboxed 16:9 videos were done with the Creative Vado HD , then the aspect ratio was changed with Expression Encoder . The 4:3 videos were done with my regular Flip Ultra. Let me know which ones you...

My one-hundred-and-fifty-fourth podcast is up . Scott's at Mix09 in Las Vegas this week and he sits down with Chris Woods , a Program Manager on the Mobile Browse Platform Team. They've just open sourced a MASSIVE database of mobile device capabilities , enabling better mobile development for ASP.NET developers. You can also check out Chris's Mix session on Mobile , or my NerdDinner ASP.NET MVC talk . Subscribe: Download: MP3 Full Show #154 Play in your browser . • Mix: Mobile Web Sites with ASP.NET MVC and the Mobile Browser Definition File

I gave a talk at Mix 09 today called File | New Company: Creating NerdDinner.com with Microsoft ASP.NET MVC . It was a fun, if challenging talk to do. I did it it with no slides at all. Just me and Visual Studio. It was one of two talks at Mix that had just code. I wonder if it'll catch on? ;) Anyway, it was quite the tightrope walk. I'll post the video here as soon as it's posted on the Mix 09 Sessions Site . The general structure was to start a File | New Company and build as much of NerdDinner.com as I could in the 75 minutes allotted. Here's a few of the highlights... XHTML Strict I pointed out how nice and easy it is to get a site to validate as XHTML Strict using ASP.NET MVC. You've got complete control over every bit...

  • Mix 09 - First Half Rollup and Session Videos

We are having a fine time at Mix '09 here in Las Vegas. You may have watched the keynotes live at http://live.visitmix.com/ . Even better, you can watch the sessions as fast as they can get them up online at http://sessions.visitmix.com/MIX09 . Here's a couple of choice (my choice) sessions you should check out. They are really well presented with not just slides, but also video of the presenter. Day One Keynote and Day Two Keynote What's New in Silverlight 3 - Joe Stegman is the Group Program Manager for the SL3 runtime. This is a good overview. Also check out Tim's detailed guide to Silverlight 3 new features   blog post. Building Out of Browser Experiences with Microsoft Silverlight 3 - If you haven't heard, you'll...

  • ASP.NET MVC 1.0 now Live!

ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is now Live. You can download it right now here . Also check out Phil Haack’s post on the release. If you are new to MVC, please check out our previous posts for more information and links to many useful blogs and resources. Alternatively, check out the official site for tutorials, videos, and more. MSDN Documentation for MVC is also now available: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=145989 Since ASP.NET MVC RC1 we made some changes to the set of properties available to T4 templates – many names have changed (for clarity and consistency) and some properties are no longer available (because the same information is available through other properties). See the following table for the full list of properties available to templates...

  • Microsoft Web Platform, Web Application Gallery, Web Platform Installer (and DasBlog)

It's so fun to help "announce" things, especially things that are a long time coming and that a lot of people worked on to make things "just work." (You can follow them on Twitter   @mswebplatform .) This is one of those fantastic things. Today, you can install free applications direct to IIS using the Web Platform Installer 2.0 and the Web Application Gallery . The WebPI will also check for application dependencies, and if you like, automatically download and install them. It'll install SQL Express, PHP, whatever you need to get your apps running. For example, you can now install DasBlog just by clicking this button: There's a bunch of cool apps available in the gallery immediately, both ASP.NET and PHP...

  • Go to MIX09

MIX Is just around the corner and if you haven’t already registered I highly recommend you do! This is one event I look forward to the most each year. I attended last year and I had the most incredible experience learning about Silverlight and meeting so many intelligent people (OK, and I had a ton of fun playing Poker too). If you are not familiar with what MIX is, MIX is a conference that gathers both web developers and web designers together who want to take their skills to the next level. There are numerous sessions you can attend that teach you the latest and great ways to build the worlds top most innovative web sites. This year MIX is held in Las Vegas from March 17th – March 20th so mark you calendar! Scott Guthrie, our Corp VP, will...

  • Mix 08 Sessions available in new dual-stream versions using Silverlight

I posted the month before last that the Mix08 Sessions, mine included, were up and available at http://sessions.visitmix.com . I posted links to the MP4, WMVs and other downloaded versions at the time as well. The Silverlight versions were the same versions, so there wasn't really a compelling reason to use Silverlight. What I didn't know, however, is that they (the powers that be) not only recorded the slides and demos, but also had cameras going at the same time. They did some post processing (on hundreds of sessions) and those new "dual stream" sessions are up and available online in Silverlight. One stream is a camera on me, and one is the slides and demos. I'm fairly physical, so I really prefer my talks if you can...

  • Back From Mix Back To Reality

You don’t so much return from Las Vegas as you recover from Las Vegas. Right now, I am recovering from my Las Vegas trip. Recovering from Vegas Nose caused by the extremely dry air and massive second hand smoke inhalation. Recovering from the sensory onslaught they call casinos . Recovering from the fake kitschiness and manafactured excitement as people sit like zombies feeding machines their life savings. Yet despite all that, I still love the place. Maybe because despite the bad things, Vegas is really the Disneyland for adults with a slight bad streak inside that yearns to get out once in a while to indugle in a vice or three. I especially love the Mix conference there. As Jeff Atwood writes (and I agree)... MIX is by far my favorite Microsoft...
