  • PDC10: Building a Blog with Microsoft "Unnamed Package of Web Love"

I had a lovely time in Redmond this last week attending Microsoft's PDC (Professional Developer's Conference) 2010. I did lots of stuff, met lots of people, did hours of "Live TV" on Channel 9 Live and presented a talk on behalf of the Web Platform and Tools team (WPT is IIS, Media Streaming, ASP.NET, everything web, etc) showcasing all the cool stuff we've been doing lately. You can stream the talk with Silverlight Smooth Streaming as well as PIP (Picture in Picture) or you can download the talk in one of four formats. Note that for some weird reason there's 10 minutes of "we haven't started yet" dead video that you'll have to seek past. You should Right-Click Save As the video you want. Low Bandwidth...

  • PDC09: ASP.NET MVC 2: Ninjas Still on Fire Black Belt Tips

While I was at PDC last week in Los Angeles I got to present an ASP.NET MVC 2 presentation. Phil has been home playing with his new baby so I was thrilled to be able to give a presentation on his behalf. I gave the talk immediately after the Day 2 keynote a few minutes after they announced that they were giving all attendees custom laptops. This talk was a (virtually) no slides, just demos talk. I showed some new ASP.NET MVC 2 features, some tips and techniques that aren't/weren't ASP.NET MVC 2 specific. I also mentioned some community projects that are doing some cool things in the ASP.NET MVC space like MVCContrib and MVCTurbine . You can watch the HD version of the talk using Silverlight Smooth Streaming 1280x720 here or the non-HD...

  • Hanselminutes Podcast 188: ASP.NET MVC 2 Beta with Phil Haack

My one-hundred-and-eighty-eighth podcast is up . This last week I was at PDC but just before he left I chatted with Phil Haack about his exciting release of ASP.NET MVC 2 Beta. They chat about the changes, and Scott gets a surprise phone call from The Gu . Subscribe: Download: MP3 Full Show Do also remember the complete archives are always up and they have PDF Transcripts , a little known feature that show up a few weeks after each show. Telerik is our sponsor for this show. Check out their UI Suite of controls for ASP.NET . It's very hardcore stuff. One of the things I appreciate about Telerik is their commitment to completeness. For example, they have a page about their Right-to-Left support while some vendors have zero support, or don't...

  • The Weekly Source Code 36 - PDC, BabySmash and Silverlight Charting

First, let me remind you that in my new ongoing quest to read source code to be a better developer , Dear Reader, I present to you thirty-fifth in a infinite number of posts of " The Weekly Source Code ." At the end of my crazy babies talk at PDC ( Tips on how I prepared here ) I had a big demo where I gave a URL to a Silverlight version of BabySmash that Grant and I built for the show. You can watch the presentation online if you like and fast forward to the end (around 60 minutes in) and see the big demo. Basically we had the Silverlight BabySmash talk via ADO.NET Data Services (I'll post in detail in the near future) to a SQL backend. Then I had an MVC reporting site that had some charts that would update as folks smashed. There...

  • Best Practices for Wrapping Native Code

At our talk on Framework Design Guidelines at the PDC , Krzysztof and I were asked about resources for wrapping a native code library in a nice managed code framework.  This is an extremely common pattern.  Organizations frequently have large "heritage" investments in C\C++\COM code and now they need to expose that functionality is way that is productive and familiar to .NET developers.   Wrapping the native functionality in a well-designed managed library maximizes the productivity of the breadth of .NET developers.  I promised to blog a few resources on how to best accomplish this.  Jesse Kaplan recent PDC talk is relevant: Managed and Native Code Interoperability: Best Practices CLR Inside Out: Marshaling...
