When we released Beta2 in Oct 2009, there was a lot of customer excitement about the super cool features in VS 2010. However, one recurring complaint from customers was that the performance of VS 2010 was not on par with Orcas. Customers were experiencing general slowness in a lot of features that was hindering them with daily operations. We heard you all loud and clear. Overall I’ve been pretty impressed with the reactions to my first round of PHP/Linux/Windows/ASP.NET performance tests. I’d like to comment of the comments   First, while I appreciate the enthusiasm of my .NET friends, the point of my exercise was to give me (and other folks at Microsoft) a starting place to understand some things about the performance of PHP on Windows and of ASP.NET. If your faith in ASP.NET is incrementally sustained by virtue of this data than I’m happy. If I didn’t think that .NET was a as good as or better than any other technology for building web applications then I wouldn’t be working here at Microsoft. With lots of great feedback I’ve modified the “SiteGlobalSettings” class I wrote about earlier. Though it still uses global static but the values are stored in a Global Resource File. This affords us the superior performance of the mechanism, keeps the “editable” nature of the data, and keeps the simple API based initialization will facilitate multi-cultural implementation when we get there. (Cultural neutral settings can be stored in a single .resx where as language specific entries can be stored in language specific resource files.)
