Announcing Microsoft Ajax Library (Preview 6) and the Microsoft Ajax Minifier
The ASP.NET team today released a significant new update of the Microsoft Ajax Library (Preview 6).  This update includes a bunch of new capabilities and improvements to our client-side AJAX library, and can be used with any version of ASP.NET (including ASP.NET 2.0, 3.5 and 4.0), and can be used in both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC projects.  Today’s release includes the following feature improvements: Better Imperative Syntax : A new, simplified, code syntax for creating client controls. Client Script Loader : A new client-side script loader that can dynamically load all of the JavaScript files required by a client control or library automatically, and executes the scripts in the right order. Better jQuery Integration : All...
Announcing the Microsoft AJAX CDN
Earlier today the ASP.NET team launched a new Microsoft Ajax CDN (Content Delivery Network) service that provides caching support for AJAX libraries (including jQuery and ASP.NET AJAX).  The service is available for free, does not require any registration, and can be used for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. What does a CDN provide? Content delivery networks (CDNs) are composed of "edge cache" servers that are strategically placed around the world at key Internet network points.  These "edge cache" servers can be used to cache and deliver all types of content – including images, videos, CSS and JavaScript files. Using a CDN can significantly improve a website's end-user performance, since it enables...

Survey: Ajax usage among .NET developers
If you haven’t already and you are a .NET developer, please take a couple minutes and answer this survey, whether you use Ajax or not. There are a number of Ajax surveys around, but Simone’s is the only one that focuses on .NET developers. The survey: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB22973CYKW2H Simone’s post: http://codeclimber.net.nz/archive/2009/05/21/ajax-usage-among-.net-developers-in-2009.aspx Read More...
New release of the Ajax Control Toolkit
A new version of the AJAX Control Toolkit is now available for download from the CodePlex website. It contains three new controls: HTMLEditor - allows you to easily create and edit HTML content. You can edit in WYSIWYG mode or in HTML source mode. The control exists as a server-side extender but can also be instantiated purely on the client-side with a single line of code. Many thanks to Obout for building this. ComboBox - provides a DropDownList of items, combined with TextBox. Different modes determine the interplay between the text entry and the list of items. this control behaves very much like a Windows combo. Many thanks to Dan Ludwig for building this. ColorPicker - can be attached to any ASP.NET TextBox control to provide client-side...
Some MIX talks
Stephen Walther just published links to the video, slides and sample code for his Ajax talk at MIX09: http://stephenwalther.com/blog/archive/2009/03/22/mix-slides-code-and-session-recording.aspx It’s pretty cool to see all the work we put into Ajax this past year or so presented at MIX. This is a really nice presentation, like Stephen’s always are. Another presentation I had lots of fun watching (not just because the speaker is making an incredible impression of me but also because I’ve been spending a good part of my time lately contributing to the application he’s showing) is Rob Conery’s. Rob is showing an interesting way to develop ASP.NET applications, aimed at ease of use and customization rather than architectural purity. Check it out...
Wally’s introduction to 3.5 SP1
Wally McClure, MVP extraordinaire and ASP Insider, just published a short book about the new features in ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 . It is a short and to the point read that should get you started in no time. I wouldn’t have shown web service access as the main advantage of jQuery myself (the selector and animation support adds more value for ASP.NET Ajax developers) but that’s a minor thing, and there are plenty of other resources to learn about jQuery . Topics in Wally’s book include: Ajax History Script Combining (including ScriptReferenceProfiler) jQuery Routing Entity Framework Dynamic Data ADO.NET Data Services http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/New-Features-in-ASP-NET-3-5-Service-Pack-1.productCd-0470457341.html Read More...
jQuery Intellisense in VS 2008
Last month I blogged about how Microsoft is extending support for jQuery .  Over the last few weeks we've been working with the jQuery team to add great jQuery intellisense support within Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express (which is free).  This is now available to download and use. Steps to Enable jQuery Intellisense in VS 2008 To enable intellisense completion for jQuery within VS you'll want to follow three steps: Step 1: Install VS 2008 SP1 VS 2008 SP1 adds richer JavaScript intellisense support to Visual Studio, and adds code completion support for a broad range of JavaScript libraries. You can download VS 2008 SP1 and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express SP1 here . Step 2: Install VS 2008 Patch KB958502...

Going to California
I’m flying to San Jose tonight for tomorrow’s OpenAjax Alliance face to face meeting , which Microsoft is hosting. On Friday, we are also hosting a new event that aims at establishing a dialogue between JavaScript library developers and Microsoft. We’ll have talks from the IE, Visual Studio and ASP.NET teams, as well as talks from members of the community. This should be very interesting. Then I’ll be flying to L.A. for the PDC . If you’re going to be there and want to chat, feel free to drop me a note at bleroy at Microsoft. I’ll be in the room during Stephen Walthers ’ session on jQuery and ASP.NET on Tuesday from 5:15 to 6:30 (403AB). I’ll also do a short demo in Scott Hunter ’s talk on the ASP.NET 4.0 Roadmap on Monday from 1:45 to 3:00...
