.NET Wonk

Wow! Visual Studio 2005 Express line announced today

http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/

Very very very cheap versions of VB, C#, C++, a Web Builder, and SQL Server (MSDE++) have been announced today in Amsterdam. I'm glad they finally announced it because I've been holding my tongue for too long!

These will be limited versions of the developer tools you know and love. SQL Server 2005 Express is free, and the others will cost “a nominal fee” which will not discourage anyone from buying them.

This is a huge win for the academic world and anyone wanting to learn how to program in .NET without making a major investment.

Good job, Microsoft!

To quote Steve Ballmer, "Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! etc...”

For Windows to survive, and I'm certainly not implying it's going to have a problem with that, but let's say to keep it 'popular' amongst the masses, it needs developers. That means cheap dev tools. This is just another step before they're completely free.

Developers drives windows, not vice-versa.

These tools will be free in a few years, I believe.
