Funny segment from Whadya Know on Programmer Language

I was listening to an archived Whadya Know show last night (http://www.notmuch.com/Show/2000/09.30.html) and Michael Feldman had a guest on talking about language, the origin of words, etc. Out of nowhere came a reference to an article in Visual Basic Programmer's Journal. I captured it and edited down a short excerpt which you can listen to at http://www.franklins.net/thunk.wma

It's funny to see how the rest of the world looks at us like we're crazy, or at the least intimidating.

Algol60 as originally defined had no language statements specifically for I/O, which is common today but unique back in the late 1950s.
One interesting aspect of Algol60 was its support for two kinds of subroutine parameter passing: call-by-value and call-by-name. The call-by-name method, which allowed Algol to support a kind of dynamic scoping (a la Lisp) was supported with a slow but flexible mechanism called a thunk.
