This was in the speaker's lounge. Mark Miller was just hanging out even though he wasn't a speaker, and Nick was trying to get some work done. Mark was snapping his gum really loud and banging on his keyboard. Michele was freaking out over some code that she was trying to fix, and if I remember correctly Mark was talking her ear off and she just wanted him to shut up so she could fix her code. :-)

I don't usually post these types of things to my blog, but I think some of my blog readers may appreciate it.

I noticed that nobody was signing up for my ASP.NET Master Classes for the last 3 months or so, and next month was no exception. I attribute this to the fact that there is so much ASP.NET 2.0 hype relative to VB.NET 2.0 hype. Also, people adopt server technology faster than client technology.

So I'm instead teaching a VB.NET Master Class (which has been well-attended all along) from July 11-15 and I'm extending a deal to people who read my blog, MSDN Event attendees, and INETA user group members. For you, I'm doing a 2-for-1 special. Go ahead and sign up normally, but then contact us and tell us you want to take advantage of the July 2-for-1 deal.

The class is normally $2300, but I'm extending this 2-for-1 deal because of the short notice.

Give a little to charity, and help your career or project too. 23 of the top Tech*Ed speakers, including Microsoft employees (don’t worry we cleared it with Legal <g>), will together to help raise money for an organization that is doing amazing and heroic disaster relief and recovery in Aceh Province, Sumatra, the hardest hit area of the Dec 26th Tsunamis.

Although news of the tsunami has largely disappeared from the international press, five months later, the situation on the ground in Aceh remains acute. Many isolated communities have not yet been helped. Aceh Recovery at IDEP is continuing their efforts to get assistance to the people that are most in need through a dynamic network of local NGOs and partners on the ground in Aceh.

Buyers will bid to win one hour of consulting time from one of these 23 speakers. Starting bid is $10 with no reserve. There will be 23 winners. Winners can pick the brain of a .NET Expert for an hour. Highest bidders will be first in the “draft” for the consultant assigned to them. Winners can call, email or IM the consultant and use the hour to answer that nagging question, do a code review, or just get some general advice. The winners and consultant are free to make other arrangements if they like.

There will be 23 winning bids. eBay rules require that all 23 winners pay the lowest bid price. Though you are only required to pay the lowest bid amount, remember the cause -- we hope that you will donate to Aceh Aid at IDEP the amount of your winning bid.

Payments are made directly to the Aceh Aid at IDEP PayPal account held by Tides Foundation which is a U.S. based non-profit. (Do not pay Stephen Forte!) Once the auction is closed, you will be contacted and asked to make this donation via PayPal to AcehAid@tides.org. This can be done from the PayPal site or even directly from the Aceh Aid at IDEP website. When they have received the payments, the consultants will be assigned to the winners in order of the size of the donations (which we hope will be equal to your winning bid). I found this footage of Band on the Runtime (including yours truly on drums) taken at an insiders party at the Rooftop Bar of The Standard in Los Angeles during PDC 2003. Don Box, Ted Pattison, David Chappell, George Bullock, Francesco Balena, Steve Luco, and Sarah Wilton Shor, and myself are in this video.

Of particular interest is the song Miguel sung to the tune of Michele by Don Box to Miguel de Icaza. Priceless. Don ordered the staff to find him a rose, or some other flower, and the best they could come up with is the flower you see Miguel holding. Don gave it to him just before the song started. His original idea was to dance with Miguel while holding the rose in his teeth. :-)

My week at DevConnections Orlando

I am about to check out of my room at the Hyatt Grand Cypress Orlando after a week of intellectual and pleasurable pursuits. I got here last Saturday, spent several days taking in the great content at DevConnections (Indigo, ADO.NET 2.0, SQL 2005, SOA, etc.), MCing a few gatherings including the Harley giveaway and the final session, and drinking Margaritas poolside. If you've never been to DevConnections, go. It's fabulous. The highlight of the show for me was, of course, recording .NET Rocks! in front of a crowd of about 150-200 people with Richard and Geoff, and guests Rocky Lhotka and Bill Vaughn. I think we're onto something here - recording .NET Rocks! live at developer conferences. We have already scheduled a live recording at TechEd 2005 on June 8th. Richard and I throw around the idea of doing a .NET Rocks! World Tour.

My family came down on Wednesday evening and I spent Thursday relaxing with them. Friday we went to EPCOT and got Disneyfied. I love EPCOT. Great place. Hate crowds though. Oh well. The next day (Saturday) we went over to Ormond Beach to visit some friends, and Sunday they came back to the hotel for more hot-tubbing and swimming. I got the fam on a plane Sunday evening and went to the Boma African restaurant at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. If you've never been there, go. Huge buffet. Great stuff.

Code Camp - sigh We have to postpone it.

It PAINS me to say this, but we have to postpone the Code Camp today. It figures. One of the biggest success stories in .NET Community history is usurped by mother nature with what they are calling the worst Nor'easter in Massachussetts history. If it weren't for the fact that we're in the middle of getting dumped on at a rate of about 5 inches per hour with 50 mille per hour winds, and the officials are asking people to stay off the roads, we would be going ahead with it.

For any of you who are IN Waltham already and are now snowed in, watch the blogs for information. Later on when the snow stops and the roads clear, if its not too late in the day, or hell, even if it is, we may open up the Microsoft office and at least be able to do a little geeking out. We will definitely reschedule this event, so you won't miss anything if indeed we do open up shop later.
