RE: ObjectDock

Who else out there likes a dock better than the standard windows taskbar? I have been using StarDock's ObjectDock for a few weeks now and I think I'm sold. I have hidden my taskbar and I only run a single visible dock at the bottom center of my screen.

Big smile on my face from this one - I recognize the plainer looking icon in the picture above. I knew that Wes was running PostXING (heck, his CodeHTMLer is a big part of it) but it's really cool to see it really there, as one of the few programs he needs "docked".

The three icons on the right are the current programs that are running. I don't have it docked all the time... sorry to burst your bubble. I do however have a custom command "blog" in Run++ that starts it, so it is only a few keystrokes away ;)

Last time I tried (only a few weeks ago), ObjectDock didn't work with my multi-screen setup at all. I mailed them and asked about it, thinking it's a standard Windows feature after all... but I was told they don't have enough customers who ask for it and that's why they aren't going to work on a fix.

That missing feature (which I really can't do without) together with the attitude didn't make me a big fan of Stardock, as you can imagine.

I'm using True Launch Bar (www.truelaunchbar.com) instead, although it certainly doesn't look as nice :-)

I've found that it oddly increases the fan speed (as a byproduct of increased heat) on my laptop, even though I don't notice any significant CPU cycles or memory dedicated to it...very odd.

On the other hand, while not as pretty, Apivisions QTbar (http://www.apivision.com/world/qtbar/) doesn't have the same effect.

I've also tried Yz Dock (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-48,GGLD:en&q=yz+dock) which is similar to ObjectDock.

Just some different options you can try out :)

I actually downloaded and am running Y'z Dock - although it seems that apple doesn't like the idea of the guy who wrote it emulating *exactly* what their dock does...

There are also a lot of Themes on www.deviantart.com that have skins that match Y'z Dock - now that I have my laptop working again, I decided to modify the hell out of it.

Wes: consider my bubble officially burst. :) I still maintain that it's cool to see an app you wrote on someone else's desktop.

I didn't download Y'z Dock because it is my understanding that it is no longer being supported because of the pressure from Apple. I have heard that it was pretty nice though.
