Sql Server Management Studio Express - you suck.

I would like to know who thought it was a good idea to remove "import data..." and "export data..." from this particular flavor of the worst front end to an otherwise badass rdbms. I shouldn't have to fight with a program to get my databases in order. What a joke.

You might want to check out these posts of mine that shows how to use the SQL Import/Export directly within Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer: weblogs.asp.net/.../update-of-sql-server-database-publishing-toolkit-for-web-hosting.aspx

Hope this helps,

Scott

I've had the same Issues. Instead of doing direct DTS transferes (export / import like I've always done, I've settled down to just use plain scripts.

The only time this messes up is when we have 300 DataBases that have the exact same structure, but we need to copy all the data from 1 of them, to 8 other ones.

Hey guys, hang on, Express is the replacement for MSDE, not SQL 2000 Server, where was the DTS in MSDE???

If you need DTS, then go and purchase the real thing!!!

check out:

[drive]:\[install dir]\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTSWizard.exe

of your management studio express installation.

I too am having a problem that no on wants to address.

The output in the result pane when saved puts FF FE at the beginning of the file and 00 after each character. I can't get anyone to tell me how to get aroung this. I just want a clean ascii comma delimited file. Have you any ideas???

Steve, I think this is Unicode format. Either use an editor that understands Unicode or use a tool convert the output files to plain ASCII. I don't know one out of my head but it'd take me 5 lines to write one in C#.

Don't forget SQL Scripter...

www.sqlscripter.com

It generates T-SQL scripts.

Err... for whoever said where was DTS in MSDE, it was there.  You couldn't use it to work DTS on an MSDE server, but you could use it to do DTS on a real server from a machine that had only MSDE.  This is a perfectly reasonable and necessary thing.  I maintain legitimately paid for databases on a real server.  I shouldn't have to pay for another server license to work with them.

The SQL Server Database Publication Wizard is the best way to script data.

I must say... what a bunch of whining about a free server application ;)! But for those of you wanting an easy way to import data into SQL Express hosted dbs, FORGET SCRIPTING! The easiest, most idiot proof thing to do is this:

1. Create a Microsoft Access Project File (*.adp)

2. Fill in the data link properties information to connect to your SQL DB

3. Use MS Access tools to import directly into whatever tables/create new tables etc.

This method has worked for me even for large datasets. It's just an OLEDB connection. Should work for most anything.

Since when is being critical of flaws in a product 'whining'? And anyway, just because a product is free, does that mean that it shouldn't work properly? Especially a product that is designed to support users of legitimately purchased software from the same company. I wonder if these people think the same way about Internet Explorer when it breaks?

Managment Console client tools for SQL 2000 had DTS, and that application was free also. I think that it is a legitimate point if MS deliberately have taken away something that was free and used by many people. Especially since MMC for SQL 2000 can't be installed on Vista.

The above solution worked by the way, but it is a very indirect way.

This leaves a gap in how you manage a remotely-hosted database from a desktop workstation.  DTS allowed us to create data import scripts and schedule them to run a specific times or after specific time inervals.

Scott, it appears to me the your suggestion is practically unworkable for data that needs to be refreshed -- in my case, from Access files in a desktop application -- several times each day, with as little fuss and bother as possible.

So, while I don't particularly agree that SSMSE sucks, I do not understand why anyone would remove SSIS support -- it's one of the most valuable client-oriented maintenance tools available.

I have to say that the lack of tooling support for VS 2005 (paid for server edition) made me switch to MySQL which IMHO has much better tooling/management software out of the box which is all free. I also don't find myself fighting with the RDMS like I found myself time and time again with SQL server.

I have to agree.  Management Studio Express hardly qualifies as an adequate tool set.  IMO Microsoft took a huge step backward with the SQL 2005 tools regardless of the version.  It seems as if a real DBA had little input in the creation of Management Studio.  I’ll take the SQL 2000 tools over Management Studio any day.

Some of us dont have ms access, and dont want to pay for ms access to do a task that the management should do, import and export is a CORE development feature

as is entering data into TEXT fields without having to copy the field data to notepad, edit it and then write an UPDATE stement to get it back in.

Just about pulling my hair out everytime a new version comes out!

To suggest using MS Access to carry out a function within what should be supported within MS SQL is like using notepad to write a job application.

I cant understand why the import/export feature isnt there!

Ridiculous!

I have to agree.  I tried *really* hard to like ssmse but keep buttin my head up against it.  At first I thought the Access solution was OK, but the more I think about it you are right - Im/outport IS a basic core function.  To have to use a purchased program just for that seems really out there.  I also have had a ton of problems creating/manageing anything with the graphical interface.  Querey commands and scripts seem to work OK however.  It *really* does not seem to like VS8 if you try to use both of them to management the same DB - pick one or the other.

James,

You are the man.  Even though SMSEE is sucky, you've saved my life with this workaround.  This is time I don't have to waste and time I don't have to bill my customers for.

Try load a script file in 2008 management studio and the copy the text  into another instance of 2008 management studio or notepad for that matter..

What are those pepolt thinking.. !?

I personally think it was a scam, Microsoft holds Convergence in New Orleans, while their customer base attends, they quickly remove import/export from SQLSMSEE!  Sly dogs!

Seriously, why would they remove this feature?  I am very disappointed.

Wtf taking out the DTS wizard?  I guess I'll just have to write my own importer/exporter.

This really sucks. First deal with hosting companies to setup databases and those people have no clue what they are saying. They just keep opening tickets. (I am saying just in general) and now everything is setup so we have no import/export : this is crazy.

I will try the MS Access strategy from James above and see how it helps..

This is f'ed up
