Mix10 iPhone App is Live!

Hello All,

The Mix 10 iPhone application is live and up on the AppStore! You can find it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mix10/id357234402?mt=8

The app was written in C# using .NET APIs thanks to MonoTouch from Novell.

We were planning on announcing the application when version 1.2 (currently on version 1.1) has been approved by Apple but we also wanted to get it out to people to try out too so it's up on the store, we have a site set up for the app here too: http://mix10.confapp.com

But just a warning...

The application has preloaded sessions on it, these will originally have the wrong rooms/times next to sessions. After about 25/30 seconds, the content will update and after a quick re-load of the app, you should see all the correct room and sessions. We wanted to push the app as early as possible to the AppStore just in case it take a week or two for Apple to approve the app. Sadly this meant we had to use random rooms/times for the session. We were pretty lucky and got the app approved in a few days so we're hoping to push a few small updates before the event so make sure you keep an eye on the app updates!

Since Apple makes it rather hard to update applications quickly, if you do have any feedback, we'd love to hear it but chances are we won't be able to get it in the app before the conference. But chances are we'll take feedback on board for another conference app in the future.

Hope this helps,

ChrisNTR & Craig

Nice one Chris. You're doing really well with this monotouch stuff. Unfortunately can't actually try the app cuz i'm iphoneless but my colleague isn't so i'll bully him into downloading it :)

Seriously, guys, for an app whose lifetime will be  just 1 wk, why not just a web app that all hand-helds can read happily, and you don't have to go through Apple approval process. I share you iPhone enthusiasm but franly, dude, you just over-engineered!

Thanks very much for developing this application using the MonoTouch on iPhone. That is a great start for the C# developers to enter the iphone market and I definitly disagree with pita.o. Thanks for the good work.

@Rob iPhoneless!? For shame! Certainly get your colleague into it. Feel free to get him to give me a buzz if he gets stuck on anything.

@pita.o Ultimately we can build on this application for future conferences, especially PDC10 where the feeds we consume will be very similar. Of course we can re-use a lot of the code to do a Android version when MonoDroid comes about (Mono running on an Android phone) and similarly with a Windows Phone 7 version.

The beauty of the application is that it will work completely offline. Obviously the twitter feed won't work but the important information will still work. Since I'm not going to have the internet whilst I'm abroad at the conference or I'll be limited to conference WiFi (we all know what conference WiFi is like...), having a browser app will cause more issues than it solves.

I see where you're coming from though but there's nothing stopping yourself from doing this. I build iPhone applications :)

What about the source code ?

Please share that app (source code) as well. The community will be very happy !

@sam At the moment the source code for the Mix version of the app isn't available but take a look on Craig's website on how we built it and what we built it from. This should help a lot to roll your own version - conceptdev.blogspot.com/.../anatomy-of-c-iphone-app-with-monotouch.html

It just crashes all the time, doh.  Native code has to be the best way.
