Community Credit Winner for November 2008
This fall has been a busy time for me, a lot of community interaction, though that is pretty typical with the position I’ve put myself in with DotNetNuke and at Engage Software. November however I had enough participation in community activities to take home the Grand Prize award from Community-Credit.com! You can checkout the prizes here, choose the November 2008 Content from the dropdown list. I’m looking forward to seeing this in my office soon!

Another shot of nostalgia regarding DotNetNuke
So I’ve been a busy guy lately, I’ve been taking night classes and I’ve been travelling all over the place, August and September included trips to New York/New Jersey, Boston, Amsterdam, Dubai, Las Vegas, in October and November. Next week I am headed to California, and then I have another trip scheduled in January to Connecticut. On top of all that I have been working with Patrick Renner on our forthcoming DotNetNuke book, DotNetNuke A User’s Guide that will be printed by WROX.

Why DotNetNuke Corp getting funding is good for you!
All of this information is simply my opinion, value it, or devalue it as you may ;)

Are you PC? I'm a PC and proud!
Are you PC? I walked into the Apple store today with Dang, it about made me sick (his macbook was broken, AGAIN). It was all I could do to respond pleasantly when one of the many (too damn many) clerks asked me if I needed help. I wanted to respond with “hell no, I’m smart enough to use a PC, I don’t need an apple product, I'm A PC” but I didn’t, I just laughed and said no thanks. I’ve been meaning to make this post for a while now, so here it goes.

Changing My Windows Live ID
I think I am finally going to change my Windows Live ID. I've always used autocrss@hotmail.com but honestly I have never used that email address, and I don't like it. So I am going to switch over to christoc@live.com. If you have me on your Live Messenger list go ahead and add that new address. I'll try to manually move over most of my active buddy lists as well.

DotNetNuke Social Sponsored by Active Modules

If you're blogging from OpenForce get your posts syndicated at DNNBlogs.com
If you'll be attending OpenForce in Las Vegas this week be sure to get your RSS Feed added to www.dotnetnukeblogs.com. I've spent some time this week setting up a separate feed for OpenForce specific blog posts. You can check it out on this URL http://www.dotnetnukeblogs.com/OpenForce.aspx

There's still time to register for OpenForce
With just 6 days until OpenForce starts in Las Vegas there is still time to get registered! This will be the ultimate DNN gathering for 2008.

WWCD? Would Chuck Zune?
So I don't know if any of you watch Chuck, I've been watching it since the first episode last season, it's a great geek comedy if I do say so myself.

Looking for DotNetNuke Modules? (minor rant, hopefully an informative post)
I’m going to start this blog post off with a minor rant about purchasing DNN modules, and had intended to follow that up with a discussion on the evolution of the DotNetNuke ecosystem customer, but both topics have grown larger than initially planned so I will break them up into two separate posts. So here goes the ranting, followed by what I hope will be an informative blog post.

A few weeks till OpenForce08
So there are only a couple of weeks left until Openforce 08 in Las Vegas. We (the guys from Engage) leave St. Louis two weeks from this coming Monday. We’re setting up a booth this year, #611, be sure to stop by and check it out.

I’m writing a DotNetNuke Book! “DotNetNuke, A User’s Guide”
So this has been in the works for a few months but I’ve managed to withhold blogging about it until the contract was signed for fear of cursing myself and losing the deal. I, along with a coworker at Engage Software Patrick Renner, will be writing a DotNetNuke book over the next several months.

OpenForce08 Europe under way
So Openforce08 Europe is under way. There are 26 or 27 of us sitting here in room 23 watching Stefan Cullmann talking about UDT 5(Forms & Lists) module. Nik Kalyani is next door presenting about Vista Gadgets with DNN. If you're not here you are missing out on some good topics! You should look into OpenForce in Las Vegas next month!

Day 0 of OpenForce EU 08
So Natalie and I are here at the conference hotel for the OpenForce Europe conference. We got here around 4pm, checked into our room, I did some work for my presentation and then we decided to walk around the hotel a little bit around 5pm. Well 6.5 hours later I made it back up to the hotel room. We made it to the bar in the hotel, and from there it was all downhill, or uphill depending on how you look at it. Dinner was from 7pm – 9pm, then we made our way to the bowling alley.

So you're thinking about heading to OpenForce in Las Vegas in November (the DotNetNuke Conference), and you need an excuse to stay in Las Vegas an extra day? Well I have just the excuse for you! Are you going to OpenForce 08? Show it off!
Like last year there are now Conference Badges available for both OpenForce 08 Conferences, Europe and Las Vegas. If you're attending and want to tell people that, check out the individual pages for each conference to get the badges. I am fortunate enough to be able to attend both conferences this year, after attending Las Vegas last year.

Have you used the User Defined Table Module?
I must say a few things about the User Defined Table (UDT) module for DotNetNuke, I have seen it, but hardly ever used it. I had a site that was using it that I needed to make some changes to tonight, I've been putting off the changes because I was afraid of them.

Is your DNN Portal Healthy? Get a checkup with the Engage: Dashboard Module
Has your DotNetNuke site had a checkup lately? Do you know how big your database is? Do you know how big your database is? How many records are in your event log? site log? What about the last time it was backed up? Have you looked to see how many of your pages don't have Descriptions or Keywords defined?

Have you voted yet?
Have you voted in the Packt Open Source CMS awards yet? If not head on over and be sure to vote for DotNetNuke! If you're really feeling generous you could vote for a Open Source CMS MVP as well, wink wink, nudge nudge!

Windows Media Encoder Command Line Batch Encoding
Mostly for my own purposes I'm making this blog post to keep track of what commands to use to send to the command line to batch encode files with Windows Media Encoder. I'm trying to do this now with AVI files I've processed in Adobe Premier but want to upload to the likes of Flickr and YouTube.

Why is DotNetNuke better than Kentico?
Why is DotNetNuke better than Kentico CMS? Reason #1, it's free! DNN is free and easy to configure, Kentico CMS costs $1500 for the enterprise license, and that cost is going up to $9999 on September 1st!

DotNetNuke Tip: Validate your modules
One easy and useful thing you can do for your DotNetNuke modules is to validate them against W3C standards. I just spent the past 45 minutes (when I should have been sleeping) going through and validating the next release of our Engage: Publish module against http://validator.w3.org/

DotNetNuke Tip: Module Setting - Display module on all pages
Welcome back to my series of DotNetNuke Tips. To get the tips program started back off I'll start with one of the most commonly used, commonly abused, and misunderstood options within the DotNetNuke application. That being the option on the modules settings for "Display Module On All Pages". To find this setting you must go to the Settings from the Module Actions for the module in question.

My first windows mobile application?
So I think I came up with an idea for my first Windows Mobile application. A Windows Live Writer type application for my Windows Mobile phone. I have an AT&T tilt, and it sure would be nice to be able to blog from the road without having to load up my website in a browser and hope to the post goes through. Anyone developed such an app? I've not done any Mobile development yet, I tried to use XNA Studio the other night to do some development for my Zune but figured out it doesn't work in Vista 64 yet....

St. Louis DotNet User Group Meeting
So I went to the St. Louis .Net user group meeting after work this evening, two months in a row now! It was definitely an interesting presentation from Denny Boynton. He was talking about Software + Services, rather than SaaS. It was a good talk, but the thing I got most out of it, was the desire to go develop games for my Zune!

I am now an INETA Speaker!
I hear the INETA newsletter went out on Tuesday morning so I can finally make this blog post, though I have still yet to see a copy of the newsletter. It is with great pleasure that I get to post that I have been added to the INETA Speakers Bureau, I've been presenting at user groups over the past 3-4 years talking about everything DotNetNuke and with this new honor look forward to increasing the number of groups I can visit. I am definitely not limited to DNN, but do have quite a bit of experience with the project as a core team member, module developer and instructor for DNN training classes. If you would like to learn more about DotNetNuke be sure to check out www.dotnetnuke.com as well as my recently launched (or soon to be launched) project at www.dotnetnukeblogs.com where we aggregate DNN blogs for the masses.

The power of the processor
So a few weeks ago I finally bucked up and built myself a new computer for gaming/development/video editing at home. I went with a Q6600, 4gb of ram, 1.15tb of drive space (150gb 10krpm, 1tb 7200rpm), a 550w power supply, and a shiny new case. I also put in a new NVidia 260 GTX video card into it.

DotNetNuke Info: The difference between Parent and Child portals
So, in training classes I always get the question "What is the difference between parent and child portals?" Well, the Professional DotNetNuke 4 book defines the two pretty well, but me being a programmer and lazy, I wanted to come up with a more simple description.

DotNetNuke homepage won't load, keeps redirecting
Alright, so I was setting up my new laptop this week and ran into a problem. It was a familiar problem, but I couldn't track it down. Forum posts didn't help, google didn't help (I kept finding my own damn blog as the number one result when searching) so I figured I would post the appropriate fix. That way when I search again and I find my own blog I will find the solution!

OpenForce is coming, OpenForce is coming!

Not netnuke, not .nuke, not dot net nuke
Alright, time for a little rant here, as I am starting to hear this ····more and more. There seems to be a misconception in the community regarding what the name of DotNetNuke actually is. Over the past few weeks I've heard the name butchered too many times! DotNetNuke is pronounced as one word!

DotNetNuke 4.8.3 Released
Last week there was a security scare within the DNN world. I won't get into many of the details, but it was actually blown way out of proportion by what used to be a prominent vendor in the DNN community. Fortunately the security issues were not near as drastic as made out. Nonetheless there is a new DotNetNuke release available labelled as DNN 4.8.3.

DotNetNuke Tip: Production using SSL, development not using SSL
Earlier this year I was doing some work on a website of mine that runs on DNN, and has SSL enabled. I copied the database and file system, and set these up on my development machine, Vista Ultimate. I ran into a problem though, I couldn't actually get the site to load, I had all the usual configured properly: a) file permissions b) IIS virtual directory under classic app pool c) database setup and the web.config modified

DotNetNuke Training Day 1
Yesterday I spent the day downtown, near Busch Stadium. Though I paid $25 to park, I wasn't there to watch the game. I was there for our first DotNetNuke Training class. Everything went great, the feedback from the attendees was good, and I think i successfully filled their heads with all sorts of information.

Converting from CommunityServer to DotNetNuke
What is a DotNetNuke Core Team member doing running CommunityServer on his personal web site? I'm not anymore! Last week I converted www.ChrisHammond.com from CommunityServer 2.1 to run on DotNetNuke 4.8.0! I typed up a HUGE blog post covering some of the details of the conversion. If you want to read about it (no one is forcing you to click this link) visit the post over on my personal website. Heck, my wife's website was running on DotNetNuke LONG before mine was, how sad is that?

Conversion from Community Server to DotNetNuke, and do you want Windows Mobile 6 on your Blackjack?
If you've got nothing to do, take a moment to check out my recently converted personal website located at http://www.chrishammond.com Yesterday afternoon I did the final conversion from CommunityServer to DotNetNuke. There is still a lot of work to do for the site, I'll create a few new modules, need to implement the MetaBlogAPI, as well as some other new functionality but the biggest thing is that I need to work on a better skin for the site, which is one of the benefits of DotNetNuke VS CommunityServer. I can easily create and change the skin that my site is running, where CommunityServer was MUCH harder to skin. I'm definitely not a designer, if you can't tell by looking at the site, the skin that is up there now as just something I threw together quickly last night.

An update on conversion from CommunityServer to DotNetNuke
So I've been working for the past few weeks on an a little project. The goal is to convert http://chrishammond.com from CommunityServer to DotNetNuke. I'm not going to be using the DotNetNuke Blog module, instead I've been adding some new features into the Engage: Publish module so that it will support blog like functionality, with the ultimate goal of making it support nearly all the blog type functionality that you find in common blogging systems. I've spent probably 100 hours over the past month or two working on the module (mostly on my own time) to get it setup for the conversion.
