New DotNetNuke Releases available!
Sunday, December 28, 2008 11:51 PM

That’s right, I said releases, plural! For the Xmas Holiday DNN released version 4.9.1 and 5.0 on Xmas Eve.

The 4.9.1 version includes a number of bug fixes for the 4.9 platform, a security fix, as well as a new HOST menu option, Dashboard.

The 5.0 version has been covered in a number of my previous blogs and presentations. For now, from a professional recommendation, I would stick with 4.9.1. This being the first release of 5.0 there will likely be some bugs that need worked out, while the 4.9.1 release should be extremely stable.

New Community-Credit.com DNN Module Release
Saturday, December 27, 2008 12:42 AM

So a few weeks ago I released a DNN Module for www.community-credit.com. Today I am happy to announce I've put together another release!

You can find it here. http://www.codeplex.com/S8RCC/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=21088

We've updated the S8R Community Credit module to allow you to submit MORE content to Community-Credit.com.
The previous version of S8RCC only allowed for submitting posts from Engage: Publish content, the new module allows for nearly every type of content submission you can get for http://www.community-credit.com

A few things.
1. You must have an API code/key from Community-Credit.com to use the module
2. Once you install the module on the page you must configure the module settings with the key/code from #1
3. You must be logged into DNN with the account you wish to submit credit to Community-Credit, be sure to have your first and last names, and email address defined in your DNN profile.

If you're a community-credit.com contributor and a DNN user this is a great way to submit your points to CC without having to use their forms. If you aren't a contributor, be sure to check out www.community-credit.com it's a great site that recognizes active development community members.

The module is written in C#, take a look at it and let me know what you think. The source is available, though I will most likely remove the Engage: Publish references in a future release as most of you who download the module will probably be unable to compile as you don't have Engage: Publish. For now if you want to compile the module you can remove the Publish references and the ASCX called PublishArticleList.ascx

Feedback is appreciated if you try the module out.

Community Credit Winner for November 2008
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 3:14 AM

This fall has been a busy time for me, a lot of community interaction, though that is pretty typical with the position I’ve put myself in with DotNetNuke and at Engage Software. November however I had enough participation in community activities to take home the Grand Prize award from Community-Credit.com! You can checkout the prizes here, choose the November 2008 Content from the dropdown list. I’m looking forward to seeing this in my office soon!

Community-Credit.com is a website dedicated to highlighting the very active members of the development community that gives back to other members in the form of blog posts, forum posts, meeting prep, open source projects, and a number of other means. This is my second award from Community Credit now!

Grand Prize: Handpresso Portable Espresso Maker
Espresso wherever you go
The Handpresso Wild portable espresso machine is capable of generating 16 bar of pressure with a handpump. Put some hot water in the reservoir, place an E.S.E. Espresso pod in the chamber and release the switch. The pressure chamber forces the hot water through the coffee, creating a perfect little demitasse of rich black goodness. I can't think of one fellow computer geek that I know of that doesn't respect the value of their own portable source of Coffee.

Handpresso Portable Espresso Maker Winner: Chris Hammond 66,200 Points

Another shot of nostalgia regarding DotNetNuke
Friday, December 12, 2008 1:15 AM

So I’ve been a busy guy lately, I’ve been taking night classes and I’ve been travelling all over the place, August and September included trips to New York/New Jersey, Boston, Amsterdam, Dubai, Las Vegas, in October and November.  Next week I am headed to California, and then I have another trip scheduled in January to Connecticut. On top of all that I have been working with Patrick Renner on our forthcoming DotNetNuke book, DotNetNuke A User’s Guide that will be printed by WROX.

What else have I been doing? Development has started on the next version of the Wiki module, be sure to stay tuned to my blogs for more updates on that. We’re making some changes to the project in hopes to make it a bit more transparent, hopefully you’ll see more on that in the next couple of weeks! I can’t be fully transparent on that part just yet ;)

So what really prompted this post? I was looking for something cool to do for a forum post on the forums at DotNetNuke.com, http://forums.dotnetnuke.com, it turned into a blog post, but it will also be my 3000th forum post!

I got into a nostalgic mood because I was coming up on 3000 posts, as well as working on the first chapter of the book as I am writing about about the history (in a much more brief format than Shaun does in the DNN 3 and DNN 4 books). This nostalgia got me thinking, I wonder what kind of forum posts I can find of mine over in the old asp.net forums, where the DNN forums originally were located. I have only gone through a few of them but I did get a chuckle out of reading forum posts I made over 5 years ago about DNN.

Here’s a link to some of those old posts, (this is the last of 138 pages, you can navigate forward at the bottom of the page)

http://forums.asp.net/search/SearchResults.aspx?q=userid%3a141900&o=DateDescending&PageIndex=138

I even made one of the first posts in the dedicated DNN Forum that was setup (#3 on this link)

With all that nostalgia in mind, I want to say Thank You to everyone in the DotNetNuke community. Without the community DNN wouldn’t be what it is today, and I wouldn’t be where I am today, THANK YOU!

How about you, when did you get started with DNN? If you look back at that time, what does it make you think of?

Engage: Publish 5.3 Released, the ultimate CMS for DotNetNuke
Friday, December 05, 2008 11:36 AM

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 5.3 release of our Engage: Publish module, the ultimate CMS module for DotNetNuke, providing unmatched versioning and workflow capabilities within the DNN framework.

The 5.3 release of Engage: Publish provides a host of bug fixes and enhancements over the previously released 5.2.2 version of the module.

The major enhancements for the 5.3 release include better Metaweblog API support. This will provide the ability to publishing content to your DotNetNuke website through an easy desktop tool such as Windows Live Writer. This release provides support for Tagging (Keywords), Descriptions (Excerpts), Auto Discovery (RSD) and image upload capabilities through the Metaweblog API.

Another major enhancement for the 5.3 release of Engage: Publish is the inclusion of a new Text/HTML module definition, Engage: Text/HTML is a fully versioned and workflowed replacement for the core DNN Text/HTML module. You no longer have to worry about Text/HTML content on your website being lost due to the lack of versions and workflow support with the core DNN module, the Engage: Text/HTML allows you to easily drop a new module on the page and begin editing content for that page.

URL Formatting within Engage: Publish has also changed for this release of the module, we now provide better URLs within the Publish modules that are directly built by your Friendly URL provider. This will provide websites utilizing Engage: Publish with better Search Engine Optimization and linking for content.

For a full list of bug fixes and enhancements for this 5.3.0 release visit our Release Notes page on the Publish Wiki

You can also see a full list of features for the Publish module located on our Features page in the Wiki.

You can purchase Engage: Publish from our website at www.engagemodules.com. All module purchases from Engage Software come with a year of free upgrades to newer versions. These upgrades are available via www.engagemodules.com. We also offer discounted renewal rates to maintain your upgrade subscription beyond the initial year timeframe.

Engage Software is a premier provider of DotNetNuke services, ranging from custom module development, enhancements and implementations, as well as DNN skinning services. Engage Software is also proud to be an Official DotNetNuke Training Provider. We are located in St. Louis, Missouri and available for worldwide development and training projects.
