Upcoming DotNetNuke Training for January 2011

With the New Year, why not resolve to learn more about DotNetNuke?

DotNetNuke is the most successful and widely adopted open source project on the Microsoft Stack. Its been around for eight years and isn’t going away anytime soon. While the software itself is written in VB.Net you are not limited to VB.Net when developing custom extensions for the platform, in fact, when I do my module development I do it primarily in C# out of preference.

If you’re a developer out there who shuns learning a framework such as DotNetNuke, you should really take a look around. With hundreds of thousands of websites being powered by the platform it has created a demand for people with technical knowledge of the system. There are job postings almost every day looking for developers and designers for DNN, so it would make sense to learn it and start to understand how it works if you want to take a look at some of those opportunities. There are even job openings here at DotNetNuke Corporation.

So how can you learn more about DotNetNuke? There are a variety of ways.

  1. Download it and start playing with it. The easiest way to do that is to use the Web Platform Installer, if you’re running Windows 7 I’ve got a brief video on how to do that, along with a minor work around that is necessary due to a permissions problem with WPI. You can find the video here. If you’re using Windows XP I would suggest installing it manually as there are WPI issues with XP as well. You can find installation instructions in the DotNetNuke Wiki
  2. Watch some of the free videos in the DotNetNuke Video Library. I’ve posted over 25 new videos in the library over the past couple of weeks, and there are plenty of others there as well. In a future blog post I’ll put a roadmap of the order in which you can watch them.
  3. Take a DotNetNuke Training class. We have a number of classing coming up in the next couple of weeks. Our classes are offered via GoToWebinar, and come with 90 days access to the recordings from the sessions so you can always go back and reference the videos to see if you missed anything, or need a refresher.

Here’s the list of upcoming classes

  • Portal Administration and Configuration (1/11-12/2011) - The DotNetNuke Portal Administration and Configuration class provides an overview, ranging from the initial installation of the platform through how to install and manage extensions. The basics of configuring pages, security, and content are covered in this intensive course.
  • Content Administration (1/13-14/2011) - The DotNetNuke Content Administration webinar provides an overview of how to manage content within the platform. The basics of content administration including workflow and how to use common modules are also discussed.

  • Module Development (TBD February 2011) - Module Development in DotNetNuke is the primary delivery mechanism of extended functionality for the platform. This course will get your team started by first setting up their environment and then going through the architecture of a DotNetNuke module. At the end of the two days you will have a custom module developed and packaged, ready to install onto any your DotNetNuke web site.
