.NET on a SmartCard exists

Randy's post about CLI development for non-Windows platforms reminds me of another non-Windows implementation I've heard about. It a CLI implementation that targets smartcards, from a vendor called HiveMinded. There has been an announce of Schlumberger - from the Smart cards and terminals division - about a Smartcard.NET early this year, and also a FAQ

I can imagine some really cool use cases, but I wanted to share this information with all of you and may be start a discussion about the various uses we could imagine for such a device.

So, feel free to comment and give your ideas ;-)

It is a very cool idea, assuming that have given us a decent managed wrapper in C#. (My company has written our own C# PC/SC Framework - it is not fun and PC/SC sucks :-)

But try and find anyone from HiveMinded or Schlumberger to talk to. I have sent over 10 email to various parties involved and have yet to recieve a response. We even have an app ready to deploy and were willing to be guinea pigs.

MS seems content to secede this application space to Sun and JavaCards. We did have WfSC (Windows for SmartCards) but eventually abandonded the project. I still have my developers kit.

Hi Adam,

From what I've seen in a quick demo, the Smartcard.NET is directly connected to the PC via USB. It's pretty simple to deploy your .NET code on the Smartcard and to run it from there.

Do you mean that you're actually looking for contacts at Schlumberger about the Smartcard.NET? If so, I think I can help.

But what about the typical uses you'd imagine for such a technology and device?

Regards,
