Whidbey slipping?

I participated in an online chat with some members of the Visual Studio team this morning - http://msdn.microsoft.com/chats/

A couple people asked about release schedules. Microsoft has been cautious in recent years about giving release dates - opting for the line "we'll ship when it's ready".  I personally agree with this idea, but it is handy from a planning perspective to have some information.  So, the summary of the response was Beta 2 would be in late March or April, with RTM in the fall (about 4-6 months later).

That's it, I just wanted to get that out there since it was said in an open forum and a lot of people might be interested.

Did anyone expect it sooner? I thought the official line was that it would be launched at the PDC, which is in October IIRC...

How do you figure 2006? Did someone move this fall into next year?

I think they'll make 2005, but I've noticed that usually the dates continue to gradually slip (with a lot of their products) until about 3 months away. Based on this, I think the Beta 2 date is probably pretty accurate, It won't surpise me at all if the RTM date slipped further.

B2 went into ZBB mode about 2 months ago. I was expecting B2 any day now, but now my app will have to wait another 3 mo for a go-live license. This really sucks for me.

They should rename the product VS2006 because it is going to be released (hopefully) at the end of 05. VS2005 was given to the product back when they expected a release in Q1/05

I think Stuart's right on target... PDC would be a PERFECT time to launch the product :)

In retro it would have been best if ms released a 2004 version with edit/continue, drag/drop databinding and one or two other featurs and then kept on working on v200x for ever.

I am really frustrated with this seemingly never ending process.
