IIS Feature is missing during SQL 2005 Installation

This is not the first time for me to see this message, so I think it may be a good idea to blog about it for future reference.

The error message is:

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation.

Last time I saw this error when I try to install SQL 2005 in my Vista environment. I do have IIS installed in my Vista and I have no idea what's wrong with this error message. (Solution can be found here BTW)

Today, I see this error again in my clean Win2K3 server box. (ha) It is much easier for me to solve this problem because the cause is just because IIS is not enabled by defafult in Win2K3. So I just select and enable IIS in Add/Remove Windows Components then the SQL 2005 installation go well.

# re: IIS Feature is missing during SQL 2005 Installation

just fyi, I found out today that Windows 7 Home premium misses:

Windows Authentication Security

IIS Metabase Management Tools

IIS 6 WMI Management Tools

So you'll have to upgrade to Premium, Preofessional or Business to get these, I have ordered an upgrade and hope it will work after that....

Thus the installation will fail, or at least it did for me, there might be more going on (named Pipes, updates and authetication) but this is also a factor...

I had the same issue in Windows Server 2008 R2, when trying to install SQL Server '05.

With IIS, you want all the IIS 6 management tools enabled.

Hope this helps those who come looking.

Surprisingly! It is like you understand my mind! You seem to know so much about this, just like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the content home a bit, but other than that, this is informative blog post. A good read. I’ll definitely revisit again.
