  • Microsoft StyleCop, Totalitarian Rules

I got turned onto a fairly new tool by a friend and was interested in checking it out. It's called Microsoft StyleCop and done in the style of FxCop but rather than analyzing assemblies it looks at code for formatting and style rules. The original use was within Microsoft for keeping code across all teams consistent. Imagine having to deal with hundreds of developers moving around an organization like Microsoft where there are dozens of major teams (Windows, Office, Visual Studio, Games, etc.) and millions of lines of code. It helps if the code is consistent in style so people moving between teams don't have to re-learn how the "style" of that new team works. Makes sense and I can see where there's benefit, even in smaller...

  • Subversion 1.5 brings merge improvements & more

My shop has been using Subversion for a number of years. It is a reliable tool and works well for our team. One area that Subversion could handle better is tracking merge information. Our team is always working on multiple feature branches and merging those changes back into the main line of development. The current merge support works fine (most of the time), but doesn't handle complex situations well. Subversion 1.5 begins to improve this with "Merge tracking" support. From the Release Notes : Merge tracking means Subversion keeps track of what changes have been merged where. This reduces the overhead involved in maintaining branches, and gives users a way to inquire what changes are merged — or are available to be merged — on...

  • Suddenly in Seattle ...

This week I unexpectedly found myself at Microsoft in Seattle. I was contracted by Microsoft Learning as a Subject Matter Expert to do some work on a couple of their upcoming certification exams for developers. It was my first time engaging with Microsoft in this area and I found it very interesting and challenging.
