  • Sample chapter from upcoming book

There is a sample chapter from my upcoming book on all things performance related within the Microsoft platform. Specifically, the book will be about performance testing, profiling and optimisation for web and desktop applications developed using Microsoft.NET. This sample chapter is just a teaser and the book itself goes into great detail about how to setup a performance test rig using Visual Studio, how to record, manage and analyse performance metrics, and what you can change to make your apps fly. Anyways, the sample chapter is located here . ( http://www.simple-talk.com/dotnet/performance/understanding-performance-profiling-targets/ ) Hope you like it. Read More...

  • Moving update

I got the offer from Microsoft a month ago yesterday, and the time since has been kinda crazy. For the most part, Microsoft has taken care of everything moving related for me. The physical move is probably the easiest aspect of all of this. It's the emotional adjustment that's hard. Lots of good memories here in Cleveland. More than anything, I'm just anxious to get back to work. Starting a new job comes easy for me. As you can imagine, I haven't done a lot of coding or anything with teh Internets the last few weeks, scrambling around to sell furniture and my house. All things considered, I think it's pretty remarkable that one can go from interview to start in about six and a half weeks, and it'd be less than that even...

  • November Conferences

I’m doing keynotes at two big conferences later this month: ASP.NET Connections in Las Vegas: November 9th to 12th I’ll be doing a keynote talking about ASP.NET 4 and VS 2010 at the ASP.NET Connections conference next week.  I’ll also be doing an evening Q&A session together with the ASP.NET team. ASP.NET Connections is a great conference that is jointly hosted with the VS, SharePoint, SQL and Windows Connections conferences (enabling you to choose from tons of great sessions).  The speakers at the event are also really top-notch. You can learn more about the conference and register online here . PDC in Los Angeles: November 17th to 19th I’m also doing a keynote at the Microsoft PDC conference in two weeks.  The PDC is Microsoft...

  • Add Reference Dialog Improvements (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

[In addition to blogging, I am now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu (@scottgu is my twitter name)] This is the twelfth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  Today’s post covers a small, but nice, change coming with VS 2010 – an “Add Reference” dialog that loads fast. Add Reference Dialog in VS 2008 The slow performance of the “Add Reference” dialog in previous releases of Visual Studio has been a common complaint that many a developer (including yours truly) has ranted about. Previous releases of VS opened the “Add Reference” dialog on the “.NET” tab by default – and when that tab was loaded VS would synchronously scan the global assembly cache...

  • WPF 4 (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

[In addition to blogging, I am now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. You can follow me on Twitter at: twitter.com/scottgu (@scottgu is my twitter name)] This is the eleventh in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  Today’s post covers WPF 4. WPF 4 Improvements WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is one of the core components of the .NET Framework, and enables developers to build rich, differentiated Windows client applications.  WPF 4 includes major productivity, performance and capability improvements – in particular in the areas of Controls, XAML, Text, Graphics, Windows 7 integration (multitouch, taskbar integration, etc), Core Fundamentals, and Deployment.  This is...

  • VS 2010 Code Intellisense Improvements (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

This is the tenth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  In today’s blog post I’m going to cover a small but really nice improvement to code intellisense with VS 2010 – which is its ability to better filter type and member code completion.  This enables you to more easily find and use APIs when writing code. Code Intellisense with VS 2008 To help illustrate this intellisense improvements coming with VS 2010, let’s start by doing a simple scenario in VS 2008 where we want to write some code to enable an editing scenario with a GridView control. We might start off by typing “GridView1.Edit” to bring up intellisense to see what Edit members are available on the control.  Doing this with VS...

  • Our Windows 7 Launch Party’s Over

The Windows 7 launch celebration went well at our place. I installed the “Windows 7 Signature Edition” on an older (Win 95 era) Dell machine and discovered that the new OS ran quite well. Even more surprising, Dell’s audio and video drivers for Windows 2000 worked great. Because I set English (Canada) as the system language, we got the Canada background themes. I used the HD TV as a monitor and had the beautiful backgrounds rotating throughout. Does anyone know how to find the location those pictures...( read more ) Read More...
