Great solution, just a few comments.

The string format should be "yyyyMMdd" or you could add the time as well by setting "_currentDate = System.DateTime.Now;" and using the format "yyyyMmdd_hhmm".

You can roll the log files based on size rather than the date by using the following for the condition in checkRollover. This is just a sample for 10MB files, you would probably want to set the actual condition value in your config.

if (_traceWriter.BaseStream.Length > 10000000)

When instantiating a new _traceWriter, you can set "_traceWriter.AutoFlush = true;" to write to the file immediately. This decreases performance slightly, but if you are using this for logging you probably want to be able to open the log while the application is running to see the latest log entries. If AutoFlush is false (default), the trace entries will be held in memory until the application ends or the log rolls to the next file.
