XP blue screen - NTFS error

So, my mates machine with XP Home on started crashing on him. Me being a bad friend, I failed to go round in time to stop him formatting the whole drive. He continued to get the error, which was on boot -

Unmountable_boot_voume

***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x82B6A900, 0xC0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Then you'd get random NTFS errors or NTLDR missing etc.

I removed the new RAM he'd just bought and all fixed. Put the RAM back in and you got the Pac-Man noise. He'd googled for it but got no joy, so I thought I'd post this up in case anyone else gets fried in the same way.

clearly his new memory is bad.

Have him download a standalone memory tester.

Its not the HD, its the memory. I had that problem before. I got some ram for one of my computers and it would work OK, until I tried to load Windows, and it would bomb. It was because the memory wasn't compatible with the system... it was some funky ram layout. But, it was just some cheap generic POS I had bought.

Have him return the ram and get a name brand.

Yeah, NT is the best memory testing program, since 3.51 :o)

I used to have the same problem at time of NT 3.51. I had a bad memory chip and my box acted the same way - sporadic errors, missing files, etc.

Thankyou for raising my blog to new heights. Might I suggest you stop whining and move to Linux? Then maybe you could ring their support department?

same error stop 0x000000c5 but no message below that upon reboot after formatting C:. Pulled first memory chipset out of bank 1, moved bank 2 chipset to bankone- presto, it works fine. The memory in bank 1 was bad- try that first.

I have the same type of problem.
I bought a stick of 256 ddr pci2100 memory, which matched the requirements of my motherboard (it says so in the instructions), worked fine for the first day or so, until it started blue screening me!
At the time, I also had a fatal virus so I had no choice but to re-format.
Half way through installation, the same blue screen appeared about "page fault in non paged area". Took the memory out - worked fine again.

I thought the memory was faulty, so I just replaced today, stuck it in, same error appeared when i tried installing something!

Argh!

I get that NTFS blue screen of death from time to time, but not at the same time. I'll get it while loading up my persnoal settings (XP-Pro), or when laoding up a program. My system has slowed down some and larger programs take much longer to load now (IE and OE in particular). The thing is, though, it is always connected with one of my scsi drives. I did a media check on the drive and it came up ok. Every once in a while, it'll all of a sudden not want to work. I'm thinking it is more my scsi card.

Any ideas?

Dell 4400 Pentium 4 had 128 megs RAM and XP Home.  Too Slow !  I installed two 512s of Kingston RAM recommended by Kingson over the phone.  I get a blue screen so I replaced the XP HDD with a HDD that has ME...and it boots right up...no problems. Tried it with a HDD  that has 98 SE....works just fine.    But neither the ME nor the 98SE will work with my video card.  How do I get XP Home to accept the new RAM?  Please do not tell me to reinstall XP because it is an OEM and, as I understand it, can not be installed again.
