Day 1: We're off to see the wizard...

23rd May 2005
Following the weekends incredibly badly designed and executed bit of code, I've decided that I have no option but to pick a book up and re-learn wot I have forgot.

I have on my shelf a book that I only half read when I first got it a couple of years ago. It’s Learn Visual Studio .NET 2003 in 21 Days by Jason Beres and the bits I looked at last time were on a need-to-look-it-up basis.

This time, I’m going to do it for real (barring 6days in France during which time I’ll be so full of cheap plonk that .NET will be the last thing on my mind) and document my findings.

So, here’s day 1.

Introduction to the Microsoft .NET Framework.

DNA, Com, DLL Hell, CLR (Blah blah blah, xcopy deploy, blah), Common type system (values and references), garbage collection. 5mins read and ok, I know most of it but to be honest, I wonder if I need to know all of it. To me, .NET is the babel fish. Throw some code at it, have it translated, it works. That’s what I want out of .NET and the CLR – it should *just_work*.

Good advice to mooch through the framework though. Wonder if there’s anything I don’t really recognize?

The Microsoft.sqlserver components look interesting, but there’s nothing that really stands out.
What an easy day :D
