What happened to Windows Messenger 5?

When I went to the Windows Messenger site tonight to download Windows Messenger 5 (MSN Messenger is a bit to fluffy for me, and Trillian stopped working... more on this in a sec) I found that the download link there is for WM4.7.  Now why would I want to download an old version that doesn't even work anymore?!

So after a bit of digging around I found the real link to get WM5, and I now see that my friends actually ARE online.

Could it be that Microsoft finally locked out all of the third-party clients who haven't taken the red pill?

Sounds like it. My messenger went offline for about an hour and all the people who were away are still offline.

I have been having a conversation with someone for the last hour even those MSN says they are offline. One of my contacts said they recieved a message that MSN was going to give him the boot for "maintanence" but I don't think I got any message like that before I was suddenly disconnected. (note, I am using the current versions of MSN and Windows Messengers)

Trillian still works,
just fetch the patches from trillian.cc
Just a note if you use yahoo you would need to change the server to scs.msg.yahoo.com

Find another messenger that will plug into the MSN 6 service. Odigo might be a good bet but it's a little buggy.

www.oldversion.com has all the old versions of MSN messenger, but no old versions of windows messenger.

Messenger 4.6 and below no longer work due to MSN using a different sing-on method now.

As for windows messenger 5.0, I have no idea. I presume not enough people could bother to sit through the 8mb download and that the changed it incorporated were not good enough to justify it being left available.

Hi All

Found it!!! If you attempt to download Windows Messenger - you'll see a comment of:

"Need a different version of Windows Messenger? Click the link below for the version you need."

Choose the link for "Windows Messenger for Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003" - Voila - Windows Messenger 5

WM5 was really only intended for use with LC Server, so they pulled it and put links on the LC Server site rather than the general one.

I don't have a bloody clue what's going on with 6.2 It's well fecked up. If you search for error 1603 and 1601 there's a bigblueball forums page that has millions of solutions that don't work as far as i can tell
