Eric, yeah, you'd think so. Web monitors like WebMon are great but they aren't very efficient since they load the entire page for processing and thus can't help but inflate blog view stats.

Eric, I should add that I implemented something like this at my personal blog at http://dbvt.com.blog. To do it right (which I hope I have done) is to require minimal authentication of the user, the notification piece (which is the most simple component), the ability for a user to stop getting updated if they chose, and the ability of the administrator to send or not send the comment without being a burden. So its not a simple widget.
