ASP.NET, .NET Framework and Longhorn stuff

Visual Studio 2005 & SQL Server 2005 Febuary CTP, Indigo and Avalon March CTP

Now that all the interesting releases of last week and this week are publicly available (for MSDN subscribers) many people both internally and externally wonder what can be installed together. Let's check the version numbers of the CLR each product uses:
VS.NET 2005 Feb CTP (aka PD7): 50110.28
SQL Server 2005 Feb CTP (aka IDW13): 50110.27
Indigo & Avalon March CTP: 50110.28

This shows that you can install all into one machine but the install order is important:
1. Install the Whidbey Framework 50110.28 from Visual Studio 2005 onto the machine
2. Install Yukon which skips the .NET Framework installation because there is already a newer version
3. Install Visual Studio
4. Install Indigo and Avalon as described in the documentation

I've tested this in a virtual machine and at least the installation worked without problems. I haven't yet tested a lot of the other stuff though.

Have fun and let me know if it works :)

Trying to understand all the downloads available on MSDN. If I want to develop in Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 on a Windows XP system. What downloads do you recommend? There are no clear directions on what releases work together making it hard to decipher what I need to download.

Hi Shane,

if you want to start immediately with VS2005 and SQL2005 your best choice are the Febuary CTPs of both (see install order above).

But please keep in mind that CTPs are more or less daily builds (with a little bit of stabilization) and not at all Beta quality. I usually install them only into a Virtual Machine.

If you can wait a little longer and prefer a higher quality build, wait for the Beta 2 of Whidbey.

Does that help against your confusion?

Just to be clear - these are the full CTP's of SQL Server 2005 and VS 2005 from MSDN, not the Express versions?

Answering my own question: after looking in the newsgroups it seems that either will work, as long as it is the February CTP version. Of course, I haven't tried it yet!

>>wait for the Beta 2 of Whidbey<<

Just note, that Whidbey Beta2 bits will not be compatible with Indigo/Avalon March'2005 CTP bits. There will be a new CTP released after beta 2 for that purpose

Hi Slavo,

you're ahead of time but that is absolutely correct. Beta2 won't be a 50110 build but a higher number and an updated version of the Avalon/Indigo CTPs will be released later.

On the same note: SQL Server 2005 Feb CTP (IDW13) won't be compatible with Whidbey Beta2 either.

I'll publish an overview as soon as it is available.
