Firefox is a great browser but not very tablet friendly in its raw form. Tablet PC 2005 has a great Tablet Input Panel (TIP) that lets you enter data into most text-based GUI elements such as textboxes - heck, you can use it to compose email or write Word documents (yup, I bIogged this using the TIP). The input panel does handwriting recognition and then spits out the text as if you had typed it. It's quite effective. Unfortunately there is something about the way Firefox works that prevents the TIP from detecting when focus is moved to a text GUI element such as the address bar or the search box on Google.
The erratic TIP appearance and disappearance make Firefox cumbersome to use in slate mode on Tablet PC 2005. Fortunately there is an extension available for Firefox called tpctip that allows the input panel to track the cursor in Firefox. More info on tpctip and the XPI download are at http://tpctip.mozdev.org/.
NOTE: To get tpctip to work with Firefox 1.0, I had to tweak the XPI as described at http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17827&whichpage=4.
There are some things in life you don't get many chances to do. One of them is blogging in the delivery room as you wait for a child to be born.
My wife is currently resting, the epidural having kicked in. So I had a few moments to write some email and a blog entry on my tablet, which is just inconspicuous enough in slate mode for me to get away with pulling it out.. No WiFi in the hospital though :-) so I'll have to drive past a hotspot to get this up. I need to go out for Rolaids anyway - a bad sub plus the combined stress of a second child during a project release week equals heartburn. And labor is progressing quite slowly, so I have lots of time.
My first child got a baby book - this one gets blogged about.
