Bedrock for ASP.NET

A lot of people (including my DNR pal Carl Franklin) suggested to do that a while back. It actually went online a few weeks ago. This article discusses and demonstrates inheritance in ASP.NET pages as a way to add functionality, and to make it available to all your pages. The article shows how to add page refresh handling, support for long processes, and focus control to the Page class.

Nice stuff in the Bedrock article. This is sorta on-off-topic, but I want to address the JavaScipt used to set focus to a control on page load. One of my pet peeves with the way this is usually done is that the site author puts this script in page onLoad. For sites that load slowly (for whatever reason), I find that usually I've clicked the field and am already typing before the page.onLoad event fires. So if the page is a Username/Password form field, I've typed my username, then I start typing my password, the onLoad event fires, and all of a sudden, I'm typing my password cleartext in the Username field.

I haven't thought through if this would apply to your article, but lately, when I want to focus a control, I do it in script placed immediately after the control so that the page renders like this: (I don't know what this blog does with HTML, so I'm using brackets for my tags)

[script language=javascript]
[!--
document.getElementById('txtMyText').focus();

[/script]

What this seems to do is set the focus immediately after the control is written to the browser and doesn't wait for the onLoad event.

I can't believe I just commented on a blog... I said I'd never do this... It's all Adam Kinney's fault!
