I just upgraded my tablet XP to Vista Ultimate and am generally impressed. Just as happened with Win 3.X to Win 9X to 2000 to XP, I'm still finding my way around. Since I did something that I rarely recommend people do (i.e., upgrade instead of fresh install), I wanted to share a quick lesson about paying attention to compatibility. I uninstalled a few key applications and drivers based on the Vista advisor's recommendation. But I chose to ignore warnings on others. All of the critical portions of the system are functional but I do have one gotcha...
There are a few applications that aren't supported on Vista; they don't work and... I can't uninstall them. When the installation package opens so that I can perform the uninstall it proclaims that the O/S isn't supported and ceases to function. I'm sure there is an easy work-around and I'll post a follow-up when I figure it out.
Also, if you're using much Virtual PC, like I do, you'll want to uninstall VPC 2004 and install VPC 2007 Beta (available from Microsoft Connect). Obviously it's beta so you'll want to approach it as such, but it is at least going to be supported on Vista.
Enjoy Vista and Office 2007!
Just a quick kudos to some friends on the shipment of Professional Team Foundation Server (Wrox Press - Amazon link and B&N link). Established authors and Team System experts Jean-Luc David and Erik Gunvaldson have added this to their series of excellent titles. My friend and co-worker Mickey Gousset joined the aforementioned powerhouse authors in this, his first endeavor. For those of you who don't know, all three are recognized by Microsoft as MVPs and all have made significant contributions to the VSTS community. If you haven't already found it but are following VSTS and TFS, Mickey founded TeamSystemRocks and is still the primary caretaker for the Team System News blog.
Congratulations Jean-Luc, Mickey and Erik. I'm looking forward to picking up a copy!
