Many teams fail to start unit testing because it can be difficult to start once an application has already started to mature. Taking an existing legacy code base and retrofitting to receive the benefits of unit testing is frequently a big enough task to dissuade development teams.

Over a year ago I was introduced to Pex - a great toolset from Microsoft Research that allows teams to relatively easily generate a comprehensive suite of unit tests for existing code. Pex is now available for MSDN subscribers and for academic use. In addition, that same team at Microsoft Research has subsequently introduced Moles, an isolation framework that can be used with Pex or separately to support unit test development independently of Pex. (In many ways I find Moles more exciting than Pex itself. This is a great isolation framework that is beneficial to unit test newcomers and experts alike.)

So what does this have to do with an apology?

I had scheduled a Visual Studio ALM User Group (formerly the Team System User Group) meeting for yesterday. Nikolai Tillman of Microsoft Research was going to present Pex and Moles to our live online attendees. I generally am online to open the meeting well in advance and to take care of any problems that may arise. This time I was blocked and didn't even make my own meeting. I can't take responsibility for some things (like traffic) but I can for not having someone standing by to help out in my potential absense. Paul Hacker has helped me out on this in the past but I didn't expect any problems and thus didn't coordinate with him.

So... For all the people that tried to attend Nikolai's presentation, I appologize for not doing a better job of making sure the meeting would occur as promised.

And especially for Nikolai, who took time from his schedule to educate our audience but was met with a broken LiveMeeting link and nobody on my side to remedy the situation, I am truly sorry.

Hopefully everyone involved will forgive. I hope to 'see' you at next month's meeting. And perhaps someday Nikolai or one of his peers at Microsoft Research will be willing to give us another shot.

I looked closely at the press release today with Visual Studio 2010 and… there is NO “TEAM SYSTEM”!?!?! Yes, it’s true. It appears that Microsoft is killing off Visual Studio Team System. The press release from Microsoft today and the download of Beta 2 on MSDN both confirm it! (Note: The public download for Beta 2 will be on Wednesday.)

But what about all the wonderful ALM tools we saw in Beta 1? What about all of the neat stuff I’ve been drooling over in anticipation of Visual Studio ‘Team System’ 2010?

Well, luckily the answer sounds like a rebranding effort. The tools are there but the names were changed. Instead of “Team Edition” we now have Visual Studio 2010 Premium. Instead of Team Suite we now have Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. Refer to press release for more details.

TFS still exists (Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010), so there is still some stability in my world. In fact, now not only is the TFS CAL included with your VS Pro/Premium/Ultimate, but also includes the server itself. And with the 2010 basic install you can install TFS on a client workstation if you wish (e.g., my Windows 7 notebook).

I have to say I was partial to the “Team System” name, but I’ll survive. And so, my friends, the king (Visual Studio Team System) is dead… Long live the king (Visual Studio 2010 Premium and Ultimate).

Tomorrow: Three online presentations for VSTS 2010

Just a heads up. In addition to a few bug fix, support in the primary tools (e.g., Timesheet and the Work Item Control Library) for VS 2005, we’ve added a new tool targeting prioritizing work based on business objectives and a web version of Timesheet for the non-Visual Studio users.

Development and testing of this new release has been one of our team’s primary focuses over the past few months. We do all of our time tracking and much of our other planning and work item activities using it. If any of this sounds slightly interesting, check out the formal release: http://www.notionsolutions.com/Products/Pages/NotionToolsforTeamSystem.aspx

It is relatively inexpensive and you can get free trials if you’re interested. Hope you enjoy the fruits of our labor!

VSTS Big Event - “It works on my machine”

If you attended the “VSTS Big Event” in Phoenix last week, I promised anyone interested a copy of the slides. So, here they are! If you’d like the complete day’s contents, check out Steve Lange’s blog.
