Word as Editor in Outlook

So, I have been using a new install of Windows - Windows Arthritis seems to have killed off my last Windows instance - it simply stopped connecting to the LAN, though Internet connectivity worked just fine.  I generally start out with all the defaults when I install stuff, and in general that works well.

In this case, when I installed Outlook 2003, it used Word as an editor, something I normally don't do, but never really found a reason why I did not like it.  I discovered the reason yesterday.

I was writing an email to explain to very non-technical users how to use a Word .dot (template) file.  I of course was following the steps the users would need to follow, and each time I got to the point where the macro started in Word, I would go back to my email to write down the exact text on the buttons, and Outlook would be locked up.  I have noticed sporadic delays as the PC tries to read the network, and so I figured that was the problem.  Turns out, no matter how long I waited, it never freed up.  When I finally tried to close down the window that contained the text of my detailed email (that I figured I was kissing goodbye), the system told me it could not shut down Word while a dialog was open.  Doh!  The Macro opened up a Modal dialog, and even though the email looked like Outlook, it really was Word, and Word could not react until the dialog in the macro was cleared.

This is why sharing components (like Word inside Outlook) is not always a good idea, and a less good idea these days, as disk space is cheap.  I see the value of Word acting as your editor in Outlook, but problems like this argue against the benefit...

I dont think the office team decided to share the components to 'save space'. I have found the outlook/word integration to be wonderful. It gives me access to all power of word integrated into my outlook interface - and when you think about it, an email message could be logically viewed as a type of word document. I'm willing to bet that the office team knew about this sort of but at some level, but determined the trade-off of having word integrated far outweighed this occurance. Besides, you probably would have experienced a similar problem if you had been writing documentation in a separate word doucment instead of an email.

That being said, I wonder how hard this would be to clear up?

Actually, even making the problem more obvious (if you click on another editing surface that is using Word, have the window that has the modal dialog up flash).

It does make documenting macros in emails difficult<g>.

The reason that I love using Word as my editor is because I get all of my smarttags automatically. Unlike a lot of people, I actually leverage them a lot because I've got a lot of custom tag lists.
As I'm thinking about this - I should really write a good blog post on the topic soon.
I'll post here when I post that - probably this weekend.

Yep, Smart Tags are nice, and having Autocorrect is also very nice (I am a terrible speller). I have a client who makes amazing use of Autocorrect (using 3-5 letter abbreviations to end up including large blocks of text). Not sure if they use it much for email, but they just might.

The problem isn't so much that Word is being used in Outlook. It's the fact that Word is being hosted in Outlook using OLE embedding. If Outlook actually fired its own instance and used it, things should be fine. But, OLE decides to do the actual sharing which throws everything off.

I don't think that there is a way around it, either. We had a custom app written that used OLE to embed Word. If they used Word as their email editor, this app would bomb. The only fix that was given to us: don't have them both open at the same time.

If I may butt in I have a problem with word as an e-mail editor in Outlook 2003. Outlook will not let me check word as my e-mail editor (greyed out). Any suggestions
