Suspended For 30 Games?!?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6549074/

Maybe it's because I'm a hockey fan, but I'm a little surprised that a player could get suspended for 30 games for throwing punches. Granted, athletes are not supposed to hit fans, but fans aren't supposed to hit athletes either.

After the infamous shoe-beating that Mike Milbury unleashed on a fan in the stands in 1979 (http://www.eagletribune.com/news/stories/20001215/SP_002.htm) he was suspended--for two games--and the fans were ticketed for disorderly conduct.

If a fan throws an object at a player, they should be obligated to receive a thrown object--such as a fist--from anyone on that player's team.

The sad thing is that some of the fans--who should qualify for Darwin awards--will probably end up with millions after the inevitable lawsuits. It sets a precident for future fans to continue to attack players who are essentially defenseless due to inadequate arena security.

Are you kidding me? First of all, any professional athlete leaving the floor and throwing a punch is ridiculous. Secondly, you failed to mention that the fan being punched, at least the two I saw who were punched, were not the ones throwing the object. Seems they were the closest available. As a long-time NBA fan I was disgusted. Go ahead and blame the fans. Dick.

JW,

Thanks for taking the time to write. However, given the lack of real insight (other than calling me a dick for having this opinion) I think the punishments were too harsh. I'm guessing you're not some sort of expert (since credible people tend not to hide anonymously when flaming blogs) so I don't feel too bad about my opinion--other than the fact I've wasted the time I have in writing this response.

I agree with you Ed that if the fans start something they deserve what they get. Take the NHL incident with Tie Domi where the fan was taunting him and then fell into the penalty box a few years ago. I didn't mind that Domi gave him a few smacks.

I haven't seen all the video but even if the player went after the wrong guy, I'm guessing that there must have been some reason why he did. I know that if I was at the game I might have hooted and laughed but what made that fan stick out for the player?

Heck, maybe it's time to move the fans off the basketball court and put in some plexi-glass.
