To Rip Or Not To Rip--That Is The Question

I've got a few long flights coming up, so I'm planning my inflight entertainment strategy. Does it require more battery power to play a song from a CD or from a WMA on disk? My thinking is that spinning the CD drive costs more energy than decompressing the WMA file, thereby wearing out the battery faster. Does anybody know for sure? Also, what about the same question for DVDs vs. WMV?

I believe this will depend somewhat on the RPM rating for your HD... I have a 7200rpm drive in my Compaq Evo and it sucks battery life *almost* twice as fast as playing direct from the DVD tray.

I can get about 1 1/2 feature length movies in when watching from the DVD player, and will sometimes run out of juice before finishing even one feature from the HD.

For long flights, I rely extensively on seat power outlets for my sanity.

Rip wins 100% of the time.

The problem with CDs is that they spend a HUGE amount of power spinning up and spinning down.

I have an older RioVolt mp3/CD player reserved primarily for trips, very cheap to acquire on eBay. It lasts a remarkable amount of time on two AA batteries (readily available and easily transportable), primarily because it only spins the CD long enough to get the MP3 loaded into memory.

And after compressing to MP3, I can fit multi-CD audiobooks on one CD, sometimes even two audiobooks.

Besides, there's the heating-pad-on-your-lap effect, and the passengers-staring issue, and the dig-out-cord-in-confined-space issue for additional power, followed by the cleanup-all-my-crap issue prior to landing. All that stuff I really don't want to deal with anymore if I don't have to...

I would think that laptop screen use would be your biggest killer.

Then next would have to be the DVD, just by the physics of how much energy would be required to spin up a CD.

I'd be terribly suprised if it were any other way.

I am sure you should not use CD/DVD player if you want to save your Battery. It is better to use any EEPROM /USB built with MP3 player.

Even pocket PC will use less power but thier battery doesn't works long.
If you have any other question Please feel Free to ask.
