New Elective for MCSD

I receieved my MCP Flash newsletter from Microsoft on Thursday. I'm just now getting around to looking at it. It looks like it is now official that there is an alternative elective exam for those who are persuing their MCSD. You can take the Security exam. I copied the links below from the Microsoft email:

Exam 70-330: Implementing Security for Applications with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET
Exam 70-340: Implementing Security for Applications with Microsoft Visual C# .NET

This makes a nice alternative to those who didn't really want to take the SQL Server, Biztalk Server, or whatever that 3rd option was. This one seems to be more code centric, and it doesn't have the word “Server” anywhere. :)

do you know how freakin' hard the security test is?

Hard indeed. Unless you know absolutely nothing about programming SQL Server, the SQL Server dev exam is far easier than the security one.

I looked through the Security exam objectives, and I noticed that I actually have most of the recommended self study material available to me.

I'm sure that if I started studying today for the SQL or the Security exams, I could pass the SQL exam much faster. But the material in the Security exam is a more interesting to me personally.

I took the beta exams in April. They were definitely hard, as they required knowledge of secure coding practices in ASP.NET and WinForms. However, I'd recommend taking them. Heck, even if you don't pass, you're probably going to come away from the exam with some new ideas. I learned a lot just by taking the exam.
