Kirk Evans will be here Tuesday night

Kirk's driving up from Atlanta to speak to our user group about SOA. He's going to break it down, and put it in perspective for everyone. Here is a brief description of the presentation:

Service Orientation:  The Pipes, the Wrench, and the Plumber

Metropolis is huge, and someone’s gotta provide the plumbing.  Kirk Allen Evans, .NET Developer Evangelist for Microsoft Corporation, will talk about pipes, wrenches, and plumbers while looking at what Service Orientation is all about.  We will crack some jokes about septic tanks, wells, and consuming services from your county or your apartment complex as only Southerners can while clarifying the pool of concepts that form SOA.  We will also look at the technologies that help us move the water.. err, I mean the data, through the pipes like ASMX, WSE, and Indigo.

I'm personally excited about this one. Kirk was the 2nd person to ever present to our user group. I have had the opportunity to interact with Kirk off and on since then at different events like DevDays, and the MVP Summit.

Hey Eric, some buddies and I would be interested in coming if we can get some directions. We're from Knoxville, we did make it down for the MSDN event in Chat. a few months ago. Would it be ok if we attended?

Of course! All are welcome to attend. How many people will be coming with you?

-Eric.

There will be no more than 3 of us. What time is it and how do we get there?

"When we got back, Rory had taken Kirk's seat. Kirk was not happy about it"

If you're talking about the *totally unmarked seat* in the front row that had *absolutely no sign whatsoever of being occupied*, then yes, I took "his" seat.

It wasn't until the show had actually *started* that I was even made aware that I had taken someone's seat, and then it was a sort of hurried message that Kirk delivered to me without my being able to hear clearly. He came up, sort of hunched over, made some gestures, and spoke in a hurried fashion. I didn't understand a word he said which is why I didn't respond, and then he took off - I didn't even have a *chance* to say anything. It dawned on me a few moments later what had happened.

After the show, I felt bad about it, but I didn't feel *that* bad about it - all the other people who were saving seats had left something behind to mark where they were sitting. That Kirk didn't even come back until *after* the show had started (granted it had only very recently started) complicates things even further.

"Apparently, you can become so absolutely cool, that being rude just doesn't matter."

You're making a judgment about someone you know *nothing* about. I don't consider myself to be a rude person in any way. I came upon an unmarked seat in the front row, and I took it. Anybody else would have done the same thing.

But, I got there a good 20-30 minutes (whenever the doors opened) before Ballmer came out, so there wasn't much of a chance of someone else getting that *unmarked* seat.

I suppose it wouldn't be proper for me to ask for an apology, but at the very least you could temper the obvious spite in your story with the knowledge that you have now of what happened from *my* perspective.

And, before making big public announcements like this in the future, it would be wise to try emailing the person you're insulting first, as it will go a long way to clearing up any misconceptions that you may have about them.

Rory: You are famous - hence poking fun at you is totally ok even if we make the stuff up.

I vaguely know Kirk and he is a decent bloke. Obviously it was just a misunderstanding.

BTW your show rocks BIG time, I am only surfing right now killing time before this evening's DNR which will be the first I listen to live. Commuting is now a pleasure after downloading circa 3GB of shows from http://www.franklins.net/dotnetrocks/

Paul -

Kirk *is* a good guy, and it *was* a misunderstanding :) That's why I'm very serious about this getting cleared up.
