Music to Code by

As I sit here and crank out code at work after being at Devscovery this week, I am pondering what everyone else listens to while they code. I have a nice set of headphones that completely cover my ears so I can block out external sound. I find that there is certain music that is good for "getting into the zone", where I am really focused and just crank out work. At the moment, I'm listening to the "Lobby Scene" track from "The Matrix" soundtrack. It's a good song for zoning out and just coding or whatever.

I have fond memories of  junior high school and playing Super Mario 3 on the NES. I used to put on "Pump up the Volume" by Mars and just zone out. I would get totally into the game.

Anyway, that's my random thought and I thought I would share.

Just about any high-energy guitar-oriented music get's my coding fluids flowing. My favorites include but are by no means limited to... Everclear, Thousand Foot Krutch, Switchfoot.

For some reason I tend to write code to Rammstein. Maybe it's because I don't understand German?

Depends on what I am coding. I try and conserve my brain cycles by expending just as many as needed. I could be listening to new age, if I am putting in properties for a business object, or I could be listening to rammstein or aerosmith or even techno if I am panning out a pre-thought out architecture baseline.

I love almost all types of music when I am coding. I usually set my iPod on shuffle and zone out. Recently though I have been really into Kings of Convenience - Quiet is the New Loud. It is a dream pop album that is really smooth, like a fine cigar. I also enjoy anything from The Dave Matthews Band when coding. For a little pumping rock I slam on the new Pillar album, new Blindside or any Stavesacre.

Good topic! I often think about the same thing. The main thing for me is that music must be playing.

I found out that my coding productivity sinked whenever I listened to music, perhaps that's because I'd most likely sing along. If I gotta choose, I prefer jazz.

I like Sahil's approach and the way he takes the code that he's writing under consideration. That's an interesting way to look at it. For me, I approach my musical selection by what mood I'm in. I find that music can be a very powerful envoker of emotion. So I try to match my playlist to the mood that I'm in. For instance, here is what is currently lined up:

(Lobby Scene - The Matrix Soundtrack), (Breathe - Prodigy), (Stupify - Disturbed), (Freak on a Leash - Korn), (Let the bodies hit the floor - Drowning Pool), (Violent Mood Swings - Stabbing Westward), (Courage - Alient Ant Farm), (Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja - Lost Prophets)

Basically, this musical selection means "Stay the Hell Away, I'm in a pissed off mood". Anyway that's where I'm at right now.

I prefer some techno/acid jazz usually. Music with lyrics distracts me when I'm coding.

The problem with that is that you *have* to get up and do the Silent Bob dance from 'Clerks'. Extra funny if there are customers in :)

Typically I will load up some Opeth/Tool/etc. (on a slow day). Pearl Jam if I want to completely stop and veg out.

Cradle of Filth/Dimmu Borgir/Lacuna Coil/etc. (on an average day, take it easy).

Cannibal Corpse/Deicide/Gogoroth/etc. on a day where I really need to smash some code together!

Right now I'm listening to Cradle of Filth - 03 - Funeral In Carpathia.

This was sent to me in email the other day, very funny....

I prefer country music most of the time, but when it comes to coding that's a different story.

When I'm coding, for attitude music Limp Bizkit works for me. Mix in some older Metallica, Guns N Roses, Ozzy, Soundgarden. Sometimes I also throw in some Avril Lavigne and Eminem. I know it's a weird mix, but it works for me. :)

Darube - Sandstorm &
DJDarkzone - Infinity in your hand

Are two of my all time favorites.

Of course, rammstien, disturbed, and the rest of the usual suspects are quite handy.
