This link help worked perfectly. Just follow the step-by-step instructions and it fixed my problem. The only thing that had me stuck was that I didn't realize there was a space between the "_" and the "c:\" Otherwise PERFECT!

Expand the file d:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ (from Windows XP OS) from i386 directory to c:\windows\system\sndvol32.exe the following way:

1. Run> cmd from Start Menu

2. change drive to CD drive (in my case d:)

3. change directory to ï386 (in my case cd i386)

4. The prompt will look like "D:\I386>"

5. Run the command

   "expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe"

{Before this pl check if your SOUND card has been installed or not}

This command is to be executed only after the sound card has been installed by the manufacturer's driver software

If the sound card is installed, then RIGHT Click the sound card icon.

Click to run Multimedia.

Enable the "Place volume in the taskbar" and click 'OK'

The volume icon should appear in task bar.

need your help in the following:

After playing 5 minutes of UFO Extraterrestials I have received a BLUE screen with some shit I didn't read, rut after restart my sound died…

Spent a day trying to reinstall audio drivers, checking bios (doesn’t have the option to turn off the audio) and doing more “interesting” things to get the sound alive, but… no result. I have Realtek ac97. The last driver doesn’t want to install, but I have tried a driver from the installation, more young drivers, and they agree to install, the audio device is working, audio control shows levels for wav, midi and CD, but NO MAIN AUDIO control.

In Control Panel S&A Devices it shows main audio control as shaded (stupid windows) as it is switched off. Can not do anything. Maybe the Audio card died?

I have:

Toshiba satellite A70 laptop P4 Core Due 3.20 GHz 704 MB RAM.

P.S. No error reports, nothing. As just the windows audio control died…

I found the problem.

the sndvol32.exe was not under windows/system32 directory.

It was in  c:\windows\system32\dllcache.

I dont know how it got moved into that path.

I copied back both the files into c:\windows\system32 directory. And then i am able to put the  Volume Comtrol icon into the taskbar.

I have lost sound, it says I have no sound device installed but it was working perfectly.  I also keep getting an "ok" prompt  before I can go to a site. Please help!!  I hate having no sound

that happened  too r comp end of feb 2008 till like the end of april 2008 we wasnt getting no sound and r comp kept rebooting on us like a 3 year old was restarting the comp off and on really fast.it would do its normal reboot thing then a black screen would pop up and say start normaly then u have too press enter then it would move on from there.then when it got too the desktop were all the icons is it would restart.and there was no welcome sound when u singed on or no you`ve got mail or goodbye when u signed off.my dad called best buy and they said sounds like your sound and we took the tower too best buy and the guy said it was the sound and something else.we brought the tower home and we plug it in it works so my dad gets on the hp main support page.and he sees an sale on an hp flat screen comp so my dad got that it came straight from the facorty.and the guy at best buy said any comp that is 3 months old is old.lol so if your not getting any sound and u cant seem too fix it i would just get a new comp.Good Luck

my old comp lost its sound so we had too get a new comp.we went too the sound volume thing at start on the comp and none of them was on mute and we checked the other sound things and they was all good it wouldnt let us play CDs.so we took the tower too best buy and the guy wanted 300 or  330 too fix it and my mom talked too my dad  intoo buy a new comp the next day from HP online.and we took the tower home and just got a new HP flat screen computer.my old comp said we had no sound dev iced installed and we ended up getting a new comp too solve the problem.

if u want too fix your font or text just go up top on toolbar too settings and look in font and text and u can fix it.u all should try looking in settings on the toolbar its got some things u r looking for in there.

I keep imputing the information provided in the tutorial and it tells me that it can't open the input file c:\i386\sndvol32ex_  what else can i do?

I don't know alot about computer but I have tried everything you all suggusted and my sound is still not working.  My problem is when I gho under accessories and to entertainment my volume contol and sound and recordings are not there.

I read all the comments,, but no-one says how to fix the problem,, volume control is installed,, but it disappeared from the taskbar,,, HELP Please

1.Start a command session.

2.Navigate to the CD-ROM drive by typing c:\"drivename" drive name means where u insert bootable cd

3.Navigate to the i386 folder by typing like

i:\i386   (where i is drive where u insert bootable drive)

4.Expand the sndvol32.ex_ file by typing

expand -r sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32

When adjusting volume control on the task bar , the volume bar does not hold it keeps sliding back to the bottom of the bar.

It could be because of the issue in sound drivers.

you can reinstall the drivers and then check again.
