Print Out Your Articles!

I'm sure this is a no-brainer for most of you, but please print out your online articles. Your job may depend on it.

On occasion, I'll get an e-mail from a wandering author looking for his article on one of our sites that no longer exists. It's embarrassing to him when potential employers click on a link in his resume to view the article and are redirected to the home page of another site or a 404. Even if the content does exist somewhere else (either at another site or url), most employers probably won't search for it.

It's even more embarrassing when the employer gives  the candidate a second chance by asking for a printed version, and the potential employee shows he didn't have the foresight to print it out.

Why would an employer still want to see an article from a defunct publication? Defunct or not, the article still may help show the employer whether or not the candidate knows his stuff, or at the very least, that he is telling the truth.

So, remember to print out your articles, and even more important, remember to check the links in your resume.

Just curious. Under what circumstances do you guys lose the articles. Not that I condone said users not having their own personal copy, but I can personally say I have a large investment of code and articles here on the WebLogs server, that if it went down, I would be partially messed myself.

I have been through this scenario. I wrote an article for a smaller online publication called AspWatch (http://www.aspwatch.com), at some point they were purchased by internet.com/jupitermedia/15seconds and now the first article I wrote is no longer there.

No big deal, it was kind of a junior article, and I have moved on to writing better articles for 15seconds.

Basically, my point is to make sure you have hard printed copies of online articles to verify that you've been published.
