Software for Rent

Do you think a rental model for software could exist?

There are some software that I use only occasionally, such as disk partition managers, disk defragmenters, benchmarking tools... These tools can't be used online for obvious reasons, so they'd still have to be downloaded. No ASP model.

But still, maybe I could avoid buying these products, but instead rent them like I could rent a car or a DVD?

  • It exists in commercial businesses as renting (leaseing) have tax implications (benefits).

Exactly. Moreover, why buy a product today while the chances are high that next time I'm going to use it, it is already out of date, or a new one with improved features is available?

  • Yes. I am giving-out my software on Rent. There are various reasons...my software... EazyCode generates software code for data-entry screen in 18 different formats (master, transaction & views) in VB.NET + supportting SQL Scripts...got updated quite often...more formats are developed...high cost. Customer/Programmers prefer it on rent as they get latest version whenever they actually need it for their software development requirements...at low cost.

  • This does not appear on your web site?

I added your product to the SharpToolbox, BTW.

  • Agree. I think there are several additional benefits:

1.You can easily switch to another vendor if you want. After you rent one software for eight months, you may find you don't like it, and want another product from a competitor.

2.You can easily change the software when your need changes. For example, you rent a benchmark tool for your windows-based PC, but then after some time, you decide to sell the desktop for a linux-based laptop. You may have to buy new software if you don't rent it.

3.From the business perspective, the item you buy and you rent may appear in different part of your financial statement.Sometimes it makes sense to consider the factor.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • The ability to change may also stimulate the vendors to build better tools.
