5 minute stand up meetings

We started having our 5 minute stand up meetings (Extreme Programming) this week.  Wow was this painful and awkward at first.

We had our 4th in a row today and got it done in 7 minutes!  First one took 15.  Let me say, these work.  Our communication on the project has increased dramatically.

We just started doing this at my company as well. It's definitely helped. Our first meeting ended up taking a 1/2 hour, though. Now we're down to about 10 minutes.

The standup meetings originated with Scrum as the daily 15-minute stand-up meeting.

Why only 5 minutes? Is the team small? On a previous project we got 10 people to report in an average of 15 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of XP, but then again that's partly because it's another thing that has been bastardized and raped by corporate culture into something you can equate with the movie Office Space.

It does have its place and works in some situations, but it's not a cure-all for development processes, as consultants would have you believe.
