Running SharePoint on Windows 7

I tried to put up SharePoint development environment on Windows 7 and guess what – I succeeded. I took smaller challenge and installed WSS 3.0 SP2. Of course, you can also install SharePoint Server instead of WSS. On my machine WSS 3.0 uses SQL Server 2008 Express edition as database. For MOSS 2007 you should have SQL Server 2008 Developer edition.

  • Thanks.. i am planning to install WSS on my Windows 7 machine.. :-) keep up the good work

  • Thanks for sharing with the community. I will be setting up MOSS and Win 2k8 soon.

  • This is just awful! I've been fighting all day to try to get programs to work with Windows 7 and I've come to the conclusion that it is pointless.

Maybe Microsoft should stop feverishly shipping shoddy software and focus on making all of their CURRENT products work together! No group should be allowed to ship a product that does not work across all platforms, processors, etc. I have a "top of the line" 64-bit machine running Windows 7 and I can't do diddly squat! Why? Because not all programs support 64-bit and/or Vista (Windows 7). STUPID!!

  • Thanks
    I did it!!!
My first try was wrong but after read your post I get it!!

    Thanks again

To get better idea what is going on check out SharePoint logs and look also event viewer to find out if there are any errors that may be helpful.

  • I have a moss and wss 3.0 installer both still have compatibility problems even when launch from wssforvista folder in the program files.

I am using windows 7 btw.

Microsoft really really must get into this problems of compatibility since this is one of the reasons they suck big time. (I know you wanna get rid of the past os but this is too much)

  • While trying to installWSS 3.0 SP1 on Windows7, I am getting the error message "There are no products affected by this package installed on this system."

Can someone please help me regarding this?

  • If you start having mysterious errors then you should understand that WSS/MOSS is not supported on Windows desktop versions and you have to find out by yourself how to solve these issues.

  • I am using Windows 7 Ultimate. I think there are limitations on Home editions, so if your install does not succeed there you should use some more powerful version on Windows 7.

  • thank a ton!! helped a lot....

  • Thanks for the valuable information. Its really very good that we can run Sharepoint 2007 on Windows 7.

  • Thanks Gunnar, for the terrific post. I dare say it would be helpful if you would update your post and show us how to install SharePoint 2010 on Windows 7.

  • Thanks for feedback, Bob! You should be able to install SP2010 on Windows 7 easily. Still be aware of problems related to DCOM settings as some of these you want to change after updates maybe read-only on Windows 7.

Here is official guide how to set up SharePoint 2010 development environment on Windows 7: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869.aspx

  • I tried to install the sharepoint in windows 7 while configuring the database i am getting error. I could not resolve it...:)
