HD-DVD - R.I.P.

Well, looks like the HD format war will end in 2008.  I bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player a year ago but I only bought about 5 movies knowing that it was foolish to invest in high prices HD movies while that stupid battle was taking place.  Looks like I'll have to buy a (gasp!) Sony product at some point in the future.

I thought about getting the HD-DVD drive about a year ago, but I didn't not for any reason really.

What is interesting is that I think the next year or so will see more online content providers of movies in particular - XBOX Live has started offering HD movies which I think is great. I just look forward to the day when movies are as mainstream on the web as music has become.

I didn't know that HD-DVD was in such a state, not realy my thing but from the outside it seemed that they were still neck and neck.

Oh well...

Well, as a wedding videographer I have been following this "war" very closely but I allways had a feeling Blu ray would prevail, especially because of Sony's PS3.

I even think the playstation was the crucial element in this battle.

Here in Europe playstations with the build in player found it's way very easily into many households and eventhough it was primarily a gaming machine it proved to be one of the better blu ray players. The EU maket has been flooded with flat panel hd ready and full hd the last year and videorentalstores started to offer BR movies and also placed PS3 in their store to sell.

Microsoft made a capital mistake not to include hd dvd in their xbox but only to supply it as an add on which was not a good idea as people don't generally like to pay again for additions.

Anyway, I"m glad that finally this charade is coming to an end, it makes it easier for me to make a well worth investment when choosing for a format to supply my clients with.
