Prototyping Technique and Tool
While speaking at the USI 2009 conference in Paris, I attended Todd Zaki Warfel’ paper prototyping session. The purpose of paper prototyping is for a team to create screen mock-ups with simple tools like paper, scissors and Post-Its. Team members would consist of graphic designers, engineers, marketing people and stakeholders. The goal is to produce the mock-ups without relying on software tools because clients often focus on non important stuff instead of functionalities at that stage.

SQL Server documenter script
I had to document a database recently. Nothing fancy, just a list of the objects (tables, indexes, stored procs). I’ve watched the threads around the Open Cloud Manifesto from the sides. When It first read the manifesto, my first reaction was to think that it what somewhat strange for a document like that to demand that the Cloud be open and at the same time, doesn’t provide a definition to open. What should be open? Oh, open meaning that customers should be able to take their cloud app from one vendor to the other and expect it to run? Can you do that today with Web apps? Let’s say…can you take your J2EE app running on WebShere and connected to an Oracle database and switch to a PHP hoster running MySQL?

Silverlight 2 in Action
Silverlight 2 in Action is a great book to get you started with Silverlight development. At 371 pages, it’s a short book that has enough info to get you going and act as your jumping board into Silverlight. Highly recommended for .NET devs looking for a Silverlight 2 jumpstart.

The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google
The Big Switch is an interesting book about how computing is turning into a utility. Author Nicholas Carr compares it to the advent of the electricity grid and how it changed how we consume electricity. I really liked the first half of the book because it focuses on that aspect. In the second half, the author explains how the World Wide Computer is changing our lives and how it will impact us. That portion of the book tends to be a little bit on the science fiction side. That said, if you’re interested in Cloud Computing, the first half of The Big Switch is a must read.
