Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 on Vista

If you download Abode Acrobat Reader 8 and try to install it on your Vista machine it could be that you'll encounter the following message:

If you do... following is the work around that i've found to the problem:

1. Start the installation as usual, do no dismiss the error message box.

2. Open erplorer and copy the "Adobe Reader 8" directory from the following path to your root dir
"C:\Users\{username}\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\temp\"

3. run the setup.exe from the "Adobe Reader 8" directory on your root dir.

  • Running the setup.exe did not work for me, it just kept giving me the same error telling me that my temprorary file is on a drive that is full, but I trird running the Acroread.msi file in that same directory and it installed the program.

  • I spent a lot of time getting frustrated trying to fix this. Thanks a lot. Btw, the error I got said the temp directory is full - this fixes that as well!

  • Got the same error, Running setup.exe from temp folder didn't help either.

    WorkAround
    ------------
Copy the Files in the temp Folder to different folder. This worked for me..

  • Hey, I also got the disk full error; and running the msi worked for me too.

but i do have RC1.... so yeah....

  • Thanks a lot, I had the same problem as the other 2 comments.

  • Same as Tyson, error read "The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible."

Copying the extracted installation to the root and installing from there worked like a charm.

    Thanks!

  • All you have to do is set compatibility mode on the ".exe" installation file to Windows XP SP2 then right click ".exe" installation file and select "Run as Administrator", it should install without a problem.

  • Vista just cannot locate the AdobePDF.dll correctly. Just copy/paste AdobePDF.dll & install.

BTW I knew that non-legitimate Acrobat 8 cannot possibly install correctly in Vista (x86)(x64)

    Just my 2 cents

  • I pulled the files from the TEMP directory mentioned above and just stuck them in a folder on the desktop. The install worked immediately, and the "no permission or drive full" error didn't come up.

  • run AcroRead.msi NOT setup.exe

  • Thanks for this tip, I was having this same problem, but not any more!

  • thanks for the tip, moving the folder worked for me too.

  • Setting compat mode to XP SP2 and running as Admin fixed the "The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible" message for me.

  • Great tip, worked perfectly.

  • I have solution. You need to set ntfs permisions on your account to full control.

  • I had this problem and your post was the first to show up in Google. Thanks for solving my problem!

  • I had the same error after downloading the trial exe. I solved it by right clicking >>>>properties>>>>>compatibility>>>>"run this programin compatibility mode for windows XP SP2"
Then right click and run as Administrator and walah!!

  • I moved the folder aswell than ran setup.exe

    that's works great! Thnx!

This is done on Windows Vista Home Premium
    (European release Jan. 30th 2007)

  • Worked like a charm, you made my day!
Thanks from groningen, the Netherlands, Menne

  • I pulled the files from the TEMP directory mentioned above and just stuck them in a folder on the desktop. The install worked immediately, and the "no permission or drive full" error didn't come up.

This is one of the solutions that Adobe says to do... move the folder to your desktop, run the .mis file from the desktop. All is well.

  • lol a much easier method is right clicking on the exe and run in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2) it woked for me :D

  • Didnt work for me.
    Moved to desktop - Nope.

Moved to Root Drive - Nope.

Tried Compatibility Mode XP Sp2 - Nope

    Run as Administrator - Nope

Took ownership of entire Windows Folder - Nope

Removed Read only attribute - Nope

Modified Temp Folder Location - Nope

Out of principle I refuse to enable the Stupid UAC!
Dont know who to lame Adobe or Bill!!

  • Worked great running the MSI on Vista Buisness

  • thanks for the help!!

  • For me it worked with turning on the very annoying UAC (User Activated Control) thingy in vista, reboot when asked, installing vista, then turn off the UAC and reboot again( alternatively leave it on but who would want that :-D )

  • Setting compatibility mode to XPSP2 worked for me.
(Vista Ulitmate). Thanks for the solution.

Took me 1.5 days to realise UAC was the cause of half my problems. Now its off! I understand the reasons for it, but still.. theyve had 5 years to think of something a bit more intelligent than that?

  • Reset the .exe file compatibility to XP service pack 2 in Vista and it installed without a problem, Cheers

  • Thanks for this tip of how to fix this. the error I got said the temp directory is full - this fixes that as well!

  • Installed the software with no problem at all. Admin access throughout the network helps.

  • This trick worked the first with no problem.
    Thanks.

  • This works...

    Hooray!!!

  • Thanks for posting. Worked for me.

  • excellent - first post I came to and it worked first time - took a few minutes to work out where tools-folder options had gone (Organise-Search&folfer options) but then it was fine

  • Just run disk cleanup, and have it delete temporoay files. works.

  • temp error....

    work with me.

  • Just right click the setup.exe compatibility, WIN XP SP2 and Run as administrator.

  • worked great for me, thnx :D

  • a Quick work around for this:

Downloading this from the internet, after it's done, right click, go to properties, compatibility tab, run in windows XP SP2 mode, and run the setup file, runs perfectly and installs to correct drives.

  • The appdata folder is hidden by default.
go to options and checkthe box in front of "show hidden files and folders"

    it worked for me!
thanx for the tip,..strange bug by the way...

  • setting the compat mode to xp sp2 and running as an admin solves the issue

  • Thanx for the workaround!..
    Worked for me.

    Thanks again!

  • The program installs on my Windows Vista Ultimate, but does anyone seem to have the problem that the installation program pops "collecting information for installation" or something upon your login?

  • As someone above mentioned already.... running in compatibility mode for xp sp2 works fine. Right click the exe download and choose compatibility tab.

  • Yea i just ran the normal installer file in xp compatibility mode and it installed straight off.
not a great start for Vista, when an app like this doesn't work straight off

  • Thanks so much been doing my head it trying to get it working!

  • On the install file right click go to options – Check the box that says “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and then select “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” – Click OK and install file.

  • This solution works.

    Thanks

  • Thanks alot for this tips! A real life saver!

  • I have rtm and work with copy to another folder

  • thanks that worked for me.

  • Successful install after running as administrator and using compatibility mode for XP SP2

    Thanks for the tip.

  • Doesn't show Windows XP (or Vista) on compatability list

  • Step by step: here's how:
Right-Click on the installation EXE, click Properties, click Compatablility, check the box that says "Run this program in compatabilty mode for ... Windows XP (Service Pack 2)", click Apply, click OK.
Then right click on the installation EXE again, and click "Run as Administrator".

  • very cool work around !!! thanx man

  • Cool stuff man! thanks

  • Great tip.... thanks!

  • Same problem here....but solved due to your great help!

    Thnx!

  • what asad said worked for me with adobe 7.0.7

so thanx asad and others for their helpful comments

a little help goes a long way

    way to go people

  • I created a folder called "Installs" on the C drive, copied all of the Abode Acrobat 8 files into it, and then ran the setup from there.

    Installed this time.

  • Good one, dude! Fixed the out-of-disk-space error. Surely it's time for them to fix the problem?

  • Security gone mad. You turn off a facility that keeps checking if you want to run a programme and it causes this type of error! Either turn UAC back on, or run in XP SP:2 compatibility mode.

  • Nice one mate, that worked for me!
    Many thanks.

  • Copyed the files from the temp folder to the desktop and it worked like a charm.

I am running a Vista Business edition.

  • All great except dont run setup.exe run acroread.msi. Apart from that it worked a treat. Nice to actually find a solution that works, weird though :P

  • Thanks man, It worked for me

  • You can also right click the install file(.exe) you downloaded, choose properties>compatibility>check xp sp2

    This worked for me

  • Run the installer in XP Compatibility Mode.

Download the Adobe Reader installer from the Adobe website. When you are prompted to run or save the file, choose save. Save the file to your desktop.
On the Desktop, right-click the AdbeRdr80_en_US file and then choose Properties.
    Click the Compatibility tab.
Under Compatibility Mode, check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and choose Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop down list.
Click Apply, then click OK to close the Properties window
Double-click the AdbeRdr80_en_US file and continue with the installation.

  • Google brought me here. Thanks for the workaround!

  • Good service provided by you thanks

  • the software is very popular. And handy for manifold useses. i am very happy for this thanks.

  • As Dave said: All you have to do is set compatibility mode on the ".exe" installation file to Windows XP SP2 then right click ".exe" installation file and select "Run as Administrator", it should install without a problem.
