IT Outsourcing

Interesting post on Slashdot about a Wired article which talks about US IT jobs outsourcing to India. I like this article because the writer actually goes to India to interview workers there to get their point of view on things.

I've been lucky enough that I haven't been affected by this, yet. Though, I did work at JPMorganChase Bank and had a cube adjacent to a prominent VP that talked daily to an offshore firm regarding a project. Obviously, this made me very nervous. But, it never affected me directly.

I've heard rumblings of companies (to remain nameless) using the “threat of outsourcing“ to hang over developers heads, and to “keep (us) honest“. But, does that work?

The threat of outsourcing is definitely unnerving, too. I can hope that if I keep my skills sharp, and stay ahead of the curve, I can avoid this. But, that's probably naive of me.

I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts? Obviously, we have an awesome mix of nationalties here in the blog community. I'd love to hear everyone's side of things.

I think is is just a bunch of FUD. I know tons of companies that are looking for developers right now. I dont think it will ever be as easy as it was back in 2000, but it is not the end of the world or the end of our profession.

I have a good friend who visited Bangalore recently on business. He visited a consulting shop with many, many developers - coding away on US projects. The interesting part was how talented and effective they were. Cheap, overseas, barely skilled labor does not worry me.... But his description of the place left me a little nervous...

With THAT said, I find most companies can barely manage an in-house project, let alone one half way around the world. I think we are 5-10 years away from any serious economic impact - and certainly more so for the less senior developers, whose heads-down work is more of a commodity.

All senior developers were once junior developers. If you lose the junior developers, you eventually lose the senior developers, as you have no pool of talent to replace them from as they leave the profession for various reasons (retirement, promotion, career change, etc).

If you gut the lower levels, the entire profession is doomed.

Thanks for sharing that Link. The article was great, quiet interesting, and overwhemed with CRUEL REALITY.
Thanks again!

Interesting point Acyl. I've never thought of the impacts of off shoring in that way.
