Blarg! VS.NET Installation

<Rant>

Over the past few weeks, I've had to install Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect several times.  Depending on the computer, it took anywhere from about an hour to four hours.  I don't know if it can be helped or not, but what I do know is that I am sick of doing it!!  It's not like this is the only app that I have to install, but by God it is the slowest install of any application in my library, including the various Windows OS's.  At least now I've got the DVD version, so I don't have to worry about switching CDs or failing network connectivity, but when you've got to rebuild a box in a few hours, it certainly makes life more difficult!  And it looks like I'll have the joy of installing the d**n thing again here pretty soon!  ARRGH!

Just one question ? Did you install from the DVD or from the DVD copied content on your hard drive. Option 2 is known for being much faster (at least it was so with VS.NET 2K2).

Well, I have a hard time believing it would be faster *overall* to copy the disc to HD and then install from HD. I installed directly from the DVD. Now, if I just had a portable HD w/ VS.NET on it, certainly it'd be faster, but I tend to think that copy the files first and then installing would take as long or probably longer. This last install is on a laptop, so the DVD drive is not the fastest.

In any event, the fastest install I've seen is about 50 minutes, which was over the network, IIRC. It's still ridiculously long, IMHO.

I also found that for some reason I have to reinstall VS.NET when something got to point of no return (designers not working in my case). But because of the long install times from CD - I took the slowest part of the equation - the CD. I created an ISO image of each disk on my machine, then mounted them using Daemon Tools (www.daemon-tools.cc). I think the last time I reinstalled it took less than half an hour.

I seem to remember there being problems with upgrading with VS.NET, but this was over two years ago. You may have to just rebuild; it's probably a good idea anyway when coming from 98 to 2K.

I'm trying to install VS.NET but get stuck with an error message "Insert VS.NET Enterprise Architect 2003 English Disc 1". I get this when copying file VDT70VCS.DLL
I have checked my cd, and this file does exist on the installation cd. Can anybody help?

Sounds like the file on the CD may be corrupted. Only solution in that case is a new CD.
