OT: Music to Code By

There are not to many hard core developers I know that code without headphones on. I know for me, coding and tunes go “hand in hand” like beer and pizza, divorce and bankruptcy, complexity and confusion, Scoble and blogging, even Timberlake and Janet's boob (uhh..Actually I guess that is “boob in hand“). I digress.

So what music inspires you to right killer code?

I like Pink Floyd - The Division Bell, and Cyrus likes to code listening to Portishead. What about you?

Foo Fighters - I have all four albums on me iPod which lasts the length of a typical coding session (about 4 hours).
Also, Orbital just rules...mood neutral which I find important for coding (being too melancholy or agressive disturbs the zone :-))

Portishead, like Cyrus, and Massive Attack. Sometimes i also like to code by Drum'n'bass or Goa Trance. It really helps in focusing and gives a rythm to my work.

80's "D&D-Style" Metal. "Storming the Castle To Slay the DraaaaaaAAAAAAaaaagon!

On another note, I've found listening to Talk Radio (esp. The Al Franken Show) doesn't really help the quality of my work ...

I actually don't code with headphones. :) Having headphones on for a while hurts my ears. I'd much rather have quiet (something I can never get enough of) than music (which I listen to every day in the car).

any type of progressive house/trance (sans words...very distracting) mix; no breaks in the music, so easy to just get lost in the tunes/code.

http://www.di.fm, pretty much all their channels. Mostly eurodance, as a european I don't get distracted by lyrics in music like americans (all my american friends actually listen to lyrics - not me), the music is just a background noise that blocks out everything else, it can be anything, as long as it's loud enough ;) They have a variety of channels though, including classical.

I like to mix it up but a couple of my favorites are Linkin Park, Evanescene, and FischerSpooner. I don't know about anyone else, but I typically don't listen to my "coding music" unless I'm coding. For example, I don't like to listen to Linkin Park while driving or sitting around the house. Likewise, while coding I would never listen to Harry Connick Jr. Strange, i know.
