All things dotNet running through my veins

Independent? Can't find a job? Get of your butt and stop blaming others!

Warning! Rant on whiners follows....

A colleague of mine sent me an article about the current hiring situation in the IT Industry, and it got me thinking. Man am I sick and tired of those who constantly blame others for them not being capable of finding work. I am sure you know a few them... You know the type...

The articled reaffirmed for me that as a consultant you have to be flexible and be able to adapt to market conditions. It’s the whole supply and demand thing. If there are not enough people that want your services, then find something else to do. If I have to become a teacher, construction worker, author, presenter, whatever.. You do what it takes. Hopefully you can find a demand for something that also fits your interests and passions. That is one of the things I DO love about this country (Canada) and I am sure the same can be said for the U.S. and others. I can be whatever I want to be and nobody can do a damn thing to stop me. Watch me!

We have two choices

1) Sit and feel sorry for ourselves and blame the rest of the world for us being out of work

2) Get off our ass and do something about it and take accountability for our situations.

I prefer the second option.

That's why being a consultant is not a good choice.

I can say that the same is true for the US!  People are starting to make their own way - case in point - I have seen a lot of "coaching" sites cropping up everywhere.  These sites are from those that are like lifestyle coaches and they seem to be making a very good living.

I also think that the same can be said for consultants IF they provide consulting in an area where such consulting is needed.

People arent in control anymore, thats what you have to understand. You can work your butt off and not get anywhere while someone who knows someone can get their foot in the door. It aint a fair playing field anymore sadly.

Yes, you are sadly unaware of the conditions of others. It is not a 'work hard and get it' world. It is who gets lucky, and who knows someone. Usually, that happens to be those without the experience, training, or intelligence to do the job. This is not a world of qualifications, intelligence, or even hard work. It's one of luck, chance, and obnoxious people telling those who can't get work they just have to 'work harder'.

For you whiners

You are where you are today because that is exactly where you want to be.

You make your own circumstances.  You put youself in the position to take advantage of an opportunity and when one doesn't appear, go out and create one. People who are lucky make their own luck

You will get what you want only when you provide other with something they want.

I was a designer / checker for Koltanbar Eng. Co. After 33 years there I was laid off due to lack of work. So far for 6 years now no company no matter which one does not want to hire me in Michigan. It would be nice to have the state of Michigan pay for training to get into the IT business but they won't train me for even what I did on the board to the computer. I was 57 when I went to them but from what my case worker is telling me CAD or any other computer aid designing is still not in demand so they will not train me, so I asked about the IT business and I got the same answer. Michigan Workers doesn't work so they tell everyone leave the state. I can not.

Figures, sounds like something a 19 year old might say. If we could all just step out the front door and trip over jobs if we just look then wouldn't this be a wonderful world. Back to the real world. Lets see how you're doing in twenty years, after you've been out of work for weeks, months, or even years. Get a clue sunny!

The problem with the system is the fact that it is Federal money that is used to train people. If I had a job when I went to Michgan works then they would have paid for the training for any job that is in demand at the time but because Michigan Works could not find a job for me or for that matter I could not get any company to even call me for an interview it doesn't work. My resume has one job on it and when I take it to every work or company they say "you don't have what we need" or they are not hiring. Yes, I am still unemployed, homeless, and no income. Food stamps are the only thing I have and that's only $200 to buy food nothing else but food. At 61 I am going to wait for Social Security so you all you people out there keep working.

As opposed to people like you, who only state the problem and fail to offer a solution.
