SmartTools.DockNavigation: Cool SharePoint Navigation using jQuery

Last week I dropped a small teaser video to show a cool way to navigate through a SharePoint site, using jQuery to display a fancy animation. Today I've uploaded a beta version of the DockNavigation component to the SmartTools CodePlex project. So if you want to try it out, go ahead and download it! Make sure you let me know any comments, improvements and bugs you may find. Over here you can see a video containing the installation instructions and a small demo. Make sure you install the jQuery component of the SmartTools project as well, since it relies on that one.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for sharing on such a short notice. Releasing an unminified version of the JavaScript might help debug/improve/extend the menu.

Thanks for putting the solution up Codeplex and your two other articles on jQuery. It's nice to see all the latest jQuery projects in the MOSS community. I'm curious to see other jQuery plugins being used in MOSS.

Hey Jans,

Just wanted to let you know that we have an internal utility that has been injecting JavaScript into SharePoint pages for ages.

Your posts have inspired us to release it as obviously it has a much wider audience than our internal needs and our clients.

I've put the announcement here:

www.buro9.com/.../announcing-shuie-sharepoint-user-interface-extender

And the code is all here and open source:

http://www.codeplex.com/ShUIE

And for fun I've mimiced your jqDock example here:

http://www.codeplex.com/ShUIE/Wiki/View.aspx?title=DevelopingYourFirstCustomisation&referringTitle=Home

Some of the features of ShUIE:

1) jQuery included, develop faster and make use of jQuery plugins

2) Minification support thanks to the YUICompressor project

3) Inject JavaScript and/or CSS based on context: (Site, Web, List, User, Page Mode (Invalid|New|Edit|Display))

4) Declare CSS media type (to allow you to customise just the print layout for example)

5) Share settings amongst many customisations (such as the location for a shared web service that many AJAX customisations might require)

6) Light-up of customisations (activate and disable customisations based upon component or context)

We've been having fun with this stuff for ages, and whilst we can't share the business functionality that has been delivered to our clients, the platform we are very excited to be able to share with everyone.

Cheers

David Kitchen

Anyone interested interested to see more jQuery & SharePoint, have a look at www.codeplex.com/inlinesitesettings

This project aims to minimize the length of navigation paths and amount of mouse clicks needed to navigate to SharePoint administration pages.

I used jQuery to listen for a particular keyboard event (using the jQuery HotKeys plugin), then perform an ajax call to settings.aspx (Site Settings) and extract the html table with links from the response and insert it into the DOM of the page you are on.
